Modifying transfer rods

Hi,

I was thinking about going the transfer strap route on my SRX 700 -98. The sled is like a snowplow and i want to get some ski lift

However, When i look at the stock transfer rods it seems like it would be possible to modify them to get longer travel. I have a metal lathe so my plan is to remove the top stop ring and weld a new one futher up the rod.

Have anyoe done this?
Would it work?

I was thinking about doing this myself before swapping skids. Looked easy enough but it might be just as easy to use straps.
 
Sounds like the skid needs to be set up. Was it set for drags? Many things you can try. The plastic bushings in the transfer rods can be modified. I cut mine in half. Big difference just with than. Also you can adjust the limiter straps. Someone had a how to set up your skid on here. BETHEVIPER.
 
Remove your skid, and check all your bushings and the state of the W-arm. My 98 srx700 had very little ski lift and the rear suspension felt terrible. When I took the skid out, so many of my bushings were completed gone, especially at the front of the skid. BETHEVIPER has an excellent write up on how to setup the proaction skid, but I found that simply removing my skid and replacing all the bushings to make everything tight and then simply setting everything to factory specs made a night and day difference. I had access to a lathe so I simply made all the replacement bushings out of oilite bronze, otherwise I am sure the plastic yamaha bushings will work as well, but will probably not last as long. No use trying to tune your rear suspension unless you make sure all the bushings are tight and your W-arm is solid.
 
The thing is that i have droped the rear suspenstion 2" and 144" track. So its not really standard anymore.

However, i modified the transfer rods today.
