I feel awful for you bud. Here is an idea. Something hard had to chew that cylinder like that. Could a wristpin OR a big end rod bearing have dropped a couple of needles?
They couple have floated up through the ports and contacted the piston. Guessit will be hard to tell now.
Could you post more pictures once you get the crank out?

are there any signs of the piston coming in contact with the crank? Is the lower rod bearing still intact?
