Help! just got my sled back from the shop after a month.. questions and pics

Ok well I'm second guessing blaming them for the carb boots. I cleaned all the greasey slick residue off everything with carb cleaner , and tightened the crap out of the boots, but the PTO and mag side keep wiggling themselves off. I can't clamp them any tighter

If they were 1/2 longer with a bit of an angle they would probably fit snug.. But with the angle of the carbs and the box it just seems I'm stretching to get them tight on both ends..

This motor vibrates a lot so if thats not the problem could I get a boot thats longer or better clamps ?
 
I know that the carb boots that run from airbox to carbs are able to be clocked, so that they are straight with the carbs. Maybe yours aren't clocked in the right positions, causing a problem, just a thought. When you go to put your airbox back on, make sure that the boots connected to the airbox have a straight shot on to the carbs, if not, loosen the clamps that hold the boots to the airbox and twist them where they need to be. Once you have everything lined up perfectly, push the whole assembly on to the carb rack and tighten the clamps, you may have to use your right hand to hold the airbox/boots where they need to be while tightening the clamps with your free hand. I don't know if this is your problem or not, just trying to help you out.
 
If they're wiggling off, then they're not being put on right. I would start by unbolting the air box so it's just sitting there ( or take it out completely). Make sure all clamps are completely loose. Push the carbs in. They should go in about an inch or more. Then tighten those clamps. Next, put the air box back in place with the cover off so u can get your hand inside of it. Massage the boots on the back sides of the carbs. Once they're all on, tighten those clamps. Now u can put the top of the air box back on and bolt your air box on place.

If u are trying to put the boots on the carbs with air box still bolted, u won't be able to get them on far enough. The little bit that would be on would just eventually wiggle off.
 
X2 if they aren't on right they aren't going to stay. The should be some alignment tab deals too. They cant be a pain in the arse to get all the way on carbs some times. When clamps are tight how much of a gap is left before the two tabs bottom out? Clamps might be wore out and need replaced.

Just wanted to add with PTO and MAG wiggling off I suspect the center boot is where your problem is. It not going on far enough causing a teeter-totter effect. I myself have had to loosen a clamp push a little harder and re-tighten clamp to get them to sit right.
 
Thanks guys... The middle boot is actually the only one that goes on tight and doesn't move. The pto side seems to be staying under some tweaking.. the mag side is still slipping..

I did some WOT pulls through a field and ran the trail wot a few times.. nothing came off, but the pto/mag boots moves out a good 1/4" .. Seems the clamps are weak, for one... as I tighten them as much as I can before it just keeps re threading.

Ill pull the airbox off again tomorrow but Just wondering if I might need new boots or new clamps.. .. I just spent a shitload of money on this sled getting dicked around by a local dealer who really didn't have a clue about triple yamahas.. or probably trips in general
 
Just wondering if you have a weak motor mount and that's why there moving. mine are from 97 also and have been off I don't know how many times and I've never had any issues.

i would check all mounts thoroughly. This would also explain why you had that belt squeal. I'm not saying that it is the whole problem, but it could be a factor.
 
Ok guys. 2 more things that are bothering me. When I am eye level with the engine the PTO side seems to vibrate more than the mag side. Looking at the sparkplugs for example , the mag side is just a little vibration, but the PTO side is really moving around, like that side of the engine is shaking a lot more. When I hold the idle at 2500 or so everything smooths out. Worries?

And while standing over the primary it "looks" like its vibrating and not spinning completely straight. I'll try to take some vids, but the work of this shop is really starting to worry me
 
So I'm guessing the airbox needs to come off again? Are they pretty visible where they are or do the carbs need to come off too
 
The front are right under the Mani. If there is a problem with the backs you will have to pull the carbs. see if you can push or pull the motor around or pry up on the engine with a pry bar. The motor should be pretty tight in the chassis. you can also start the sled with the hood open hold the brake and hit the gas and see if the motor jumps around. Just remember to not do it so much that you burn your belt.
 
Thanks again man. I'll try all that tomorrow. I tried to rock it, but it felt solid and both mounts under the Mani looked good.. But I'll check again.
 
# 1 adjust your idle to around 16-1800rpm,# 2 make sure you don't have a tweaked air box ( I know sometimes that get situated around and don't line up rt. like if rolled it and tweaked the stearring loop bar, like I did)# 3 make sure the intake boots are on the rt intakes, they are molded a lil different per intake to the carbs, and clean the rubbers real good espeacially where they clamp onto the carbs..also at that low of an idle the motor vibrates like you are stating ,, the nature of the beast!
 
Well I dunno if the boots are any different as the guy who cleaned the carbs had them off. And if they are different I'm sure he didn't put them on right. I sprayed off the carb ( where the boot goes )and the inside of the boots to make sure there was no oil/gas slick residue before I put them back on, but they still came off. I'm gonna see if I can get new clamps then take the airbox out and try everything again.

What's confusing is that the carb boots have alignment notches on them, to line up with the notch on the airbox, but obviously thats not working for me because they keep coming off
