hey guys trying to get my gfs 98 vmax 500 xtc dialed in and striking out the machine is bone stock and it just feels like a lemon i did some reading on here in the tech pages and i changed the setting in the secondary from 6-2 to 6-1 as some one else said it worked good not so much for me the helix is stock and the spring is black with a red spot of paint on it she sled seems absolutely gutless and will hardly go over 60 across the lake and once it ramps up with power if you hit the throttle again it feels like its not doing anything please help what are the best set ups for these gas hogs?
 
Upgrade to a venom...lol I wish I could for my wife anyways. My wife's goes good crossed the lakes. All stock no mods. I would check float setting and make sure carbs are spotless. Other then that there was a section in the tuning section about changing the weights springs and helix. These things are gas and oil hogs as they are I don't know if changing them much will help that. Good luck
 
Well the oil an gas hog part is non fixable. I can get mine (a 2000) up to about 85-90 across the lake with stock clutching with a strong pull between 5-7 grand. I experienced your problem when my belt was worn bad. So check carbs and belt. Might need new springs also.

I agree with SRX500Kid check your belt it should be riding just above the driven clutch if not replace the belt or make adjustments on the driven adjustment washers so the belt is riding just above the driven. What kind of RPM's are you getting? Keep in mind if you are riding in deeper soft snow you are NOT going to be doing 80 mph with a 500 cc sled! Good Luck
 
I've got the exact same sled except mines got 96 studs. It pulls good and strong from a dead stop but if you lay into it after cruising it doesn't usually pick up hardly any speed. Sled has 4,000 miles and has had problem for quite some time. I have gotten it to go 75-80mph on a straight away but if you let out and get back in your lucky to go 55mph. Ice or snow same problem. It seems to foul plugs more often then my 600. I'm considering changing my main jet 1 size smaller. I sure hope someone figures this out.
 
Mine also has studs. I have yet to foul a plug and mine has almost 5 thousand on it. Hope we figure this out for ya!

just throw the vmaxjhon set up into it and be done with it. it is in the tec page under user set ups. I ran it on my 2001 sx500r and it made it an awesome corner to corner sled in the trails. still did 80-90 mph topped out depending on conditions.
 
the belt is sitting about 1/8th of an inch below the top of the 2ndary clutch I tried holes 6 and 3 tonight and it seemed alot snappier and i was able to pull off 70 mph and it ran like 8200rpms wide open i do think the belt should be changed though
 
Yup change out that belt. Mine was about the same as yours. Sense I changed mine out its much better but I do get the annoying belt squeal. Defiantly get a new belt!

well looks like a belt for the weekend and i plan on puttin a belt on and then in the works rebuilding the primary im thinking 8 dj weights in it and some of the .8 & 3.6 gram rivets do the heavier rivets go in the inner hole then? thats what the 01 sxr 500 has hoping that will make it rip!! another guy in the clutch tuner page said he ran them weights with the 4.5 gram steel weights in both holes what would the differances be anyone know?

500 XT and 500XTC tuning

45/39 Helix, 8-ab weights and stock springs. 0.8g rivet in the tip and might have to change slightly to hold 77rpm.

47/41 helix, 8-ab weights with a 0.8 gram rivet in tip & pivot empty. Gear down 1 tooth & drop mains 1/2 a size.
 
I agree with the 47/41 setup I bought a helix off Turk a nice few years ago and did this setup in my brothers sxr what a rocket for a 500. I thought I used 2.4 gram rivits though but I will check and see.
