Hello TY family.. I have a 1997 SX 700 red head with 4,300 miles and it's time for a new track, suspension, gears, pipes, clutches, dropping down the skid and a few mods I see here on this site. Still runs great and all, but the time is up.. I heard about a lower gear, as the stock gearing is "tall". Different shocks for front and rear skid and different shocks for front skis to get more travel. I would like to install a 1.00 new ripsaw track with 96 studs (1.11 studs without problem?), 4th wheel kit, anti ratchet drives and dropping the suspension down like I have seen on a few of these sleds on here. Piping and clutching and jetting are new to me but I'm mechanically inclined and have no problem building old chevy trucks. I'd like to refurbish and improve this sled as I love it and understand it's the best sled probably ever made. I'm lost where to start.. Well, I know the first thing is MONEY. Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated... P.S. I'm 6' 3" tall and 280lbs, I know a heavier rider has alot to do with setup and clutching.. I'm not new to the sport just had kids and now I got some time..

Drop your top gear to 22 that will help. The track and studs sound fine. There are some good setups in the tech section for your clutches. if you want to long travel it you either need bethvipers conv kit or you will need all the tie rods and rad rods from a long travel sled sxr xtc venture you will also need the shocks. As far as pipes they ad 22-25 HP but you will lose fuel econ. There a couple different brands they all performs well.

I have a 22 tooth gear if you want one.......... $25 + shipping cost. Low miles on it.... I think just one sled trip or under 300 miles on it...... put it on and if you don't like it send it back......Tod 2607019033

0. 51/43 Helix, stock weights w/4.5g rivet in 1st hole and 3.1g in tip, 2-3 engagement shims, stock springs(buy BRAND NEW, never used fresh springs that aren't tired and weak.), 1 layer removed from head gasket and 22/40 gearing.
1. Change track.
2. While track/skid is out send shocks to Pioneer for rebuild or long travel. http://www.pioneerperformance.net/store/
4. Carbon tech reeds. http://www.carbontech.com/snow/yamaha.html
5.But 1st of all go to TY Home, Technical Pages, Snow tech and soak up as much as you need.

Do you REEEEEAAAAALY need studs? A 1.5 Ripsaw will fit with protectors removed. And ya don't have to worry about your heat exchangers. Lots of fun to be had w/o the hassle of studs.I would like to install a 1.00 new ripsaw track with 96 studs

Yeah....do u really need them?? lol. My srx was studded when I bought it, never like studs so I took them out, she seems to hook up just fine without them on the trail in regular snow conditions. If you're on ice alot you should have them.
First of all congratulations on getting your kids raised successfully. I am in the same boat as my oldest is out of college and the other 2 are in college and will hopefully be off the payroll soon. So, for the first time ever I can sled and work on sleds pretty much as much as I want. As long as I keep the wife happy somewhat anyway.
Here is what I have done to my SXR over the last few years and to tell you the truth, on flat trail it's more fun and comfortable for me to ride than my new Viper. I'm sure some of that is due to getting the Viper set up properly and adjusting my riding style.
Here is my list of Mods
Aaen triple pipes
89l weights with 4.5 gram rivets
14.5 rollers
46/40 helix
Reed spacers
Jets 147.5 across
Billet rear wheels
Custom seat
Rebuilt revalved shocks
Skid plate
Camoplast Track Ice Attak 15 x 121 x 1.063 Lug,
Lots of guys on this site that know a whole lot more than I do so you're in the right place.
Good luck!

Well you picked the right sled anyways. Definetley a good runner!! I put a vector rear skid in mine and viper shocks in front with skidoo springs on shocks. Raised the stock seat 4inches with some aluminum channel. 2in bar risers. For big dude like you I would highly recommend. Depending on your budget of course. But those changes I made to mine made it one hell of a sled. Tons of fun. You can put in just about any better riding rear skid out of doo or poo or cat. Lots of info on here just search and take your laptop to the bathroom and start reading. LOL good luck
