need some pipe and clutching help please

Please bare with me I'm new to tinkering on sleds... I recently purchased bender triple pipes from yammi 3:16? great deal... I jetted the sled 47.5p stock needle pos , 147.5m. have 150m asside incase I'm lean... I'm from pa and ride in 20-35 degrees on average... I know nothing about clutching... Its a"01 sx-r 700 .. Vforce reeds , 1in lug track 96 picks 1/8in above track... Nothing crazy... it has a bender helix , black primary spring and looks to be blue smudge on it... all black secondary spring... No idea on weights... It ran 8,300 rpm with a can. its at 86-8700rpm with triple pipes... I know it needs to be in the 8800-9000 range... Any suggestions? it engages at 3900-4000 rpm... Belt and clutches get pretty warm... Almost to hott to touch after 4 1/8-1/4 mile passes..
any help is appreciated thanks so much steven..
 
I also ran marker down the clutch. Their is 1/4-1/2 in line left on the upper part of the primary. Same with the lower part on the secondary.. if that helps
 
Ask 3:16 he knows his stuff can put ya close. Your not all that far off with 8700 rpm
 
I also just installed bender pipes, on my 01 sxr 700, I ran stock pilots, and 150 mains, sled is otherwise bone stock and I'm at 8600 rpm I'm thinking of trying Turks recommended setup with the 89l's
 
I'm about to that point. toss out my current bender set up ..which is what's holding me back at the moment
 
Just wondering How the belt is and which belt you are running. Since you said it is getting fairly hot pretty quick. The 89l and 89dn will change the rpms some between the two. About 200 rpms. I had a ultimax pro on my sx last year and it put me in the 8600-8700 rpms with the 89l I am running 8400-8500 rpm.
 
Goodyear powerstreak... Me next question. Is if I go to 89l, 2.4g rivits and stock springs. Can I leave the bender helix, if so what settings?
 
And not to scatter the thread to much... But before I go calling bender to get what I need ( last resort). Where would it be best to find 89l weights, rivits, rollers, and springs? when I look up on partzilla or any other place it comes up 8gh 8dl etc... No 89l and no rivit weights or spring colors.... Kinda a pain ... I really don't wanna test and tune and buy buy buy... with the little snow I get I just wanna slap her together and go haha
 
stock belt for your sled is 8DN-17641-01-00 According to this web site http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/5003bec8f8700212fc840b46/primary-sheave If I remember right the 8dn will give a higher rpm. Its a harder compound. The 89l is a softer compound little lower rpm. If it was me I would try the Yamaha belt 8dn and see what happens. Since you are only trying to gain 200 rpms I would also clean the clutches with green scotch bright pad. Not sure how the Goodyear belt compares. I bought my last belt off ebay. Sorry cant help with springs and weights. Have you checked the tech pages??

well at 30$ each off eBay and them holding up well I kinda dont wanna swap them... But will if need be.. wouldn't swapping my helix from 6 to 9 help me pull more rpm? I think its close as is and tired of putting money into it. I paid 600$ because I saw potential it and now its a clean solid sled, but when everyone said 20-25hp just from pipes I could not resist (:....and Its out running my buddies 98 srx which hooks 10x better than mine but just has cans so I think I'm close...but befor I dump 200-250$ into a clutch set up , I'm up for trying to get it in the right rpm any free ways I can.and for As little I know this bender clutch set up is right with wrong belt, or spring, or something easy. I need to read more and get an understanding on how clutches should work... Unfortunately I learn by playing rather than reading... After 1500$ and lots of trial/error I finally pulled 60hp from my yfz450....but now can explain to anyone how to do it without Waisted money in unnecessary parts and time..
 
Personally I think you are so close that I would let it be and save my money. Sounds like it is running very well. Not saying that belt would be the answer. It would be worth a try. What belt is on your buddies 98? Maybe you could try that one and decide or what is your spare belt just to try and see. I am like you and learn by doing and not reading. I am wondering if you could add a little more pre load to your secondary spring. I know the pre load changes shift points but rpm get affected some. I have not had mine apart so I dont know if you can like I can on my cat.

Thanks very much.. I was thinking that stick with it and be happy but needed reassurance I guess lol... I will try his belt. Factory Yamaha he said.... allthough he is not so happy I'm beating him with a trail sled that has reverse as it is! Haha.... I know once I loosen the straps and adjust them bender transfer rods he will eat my powder !... my big consern mostly has been even if I'm in the right rpm range does it mean its clutching is ok? yammi316 I think? Sent me clutching info but after I added it all up 250$ is it worth it... I bought the sled for 600$ with 4000mi 125psi across the board. Put new seat, picks, drive cog bearings, heat exchanger, grips and skis, and left belly pan on than with the pipes registration jets and title in at 1500$ ... Getting to where I could have bought one ready to go...
 
I think everyone has their own opinion on clutching. What they like and dont like. I learned some with 2 older cats that I have but I am no expert. I think as long as you are happy with your engagement rpms. which I think 4000 is about perfect. Your happy with your shift points not pushing you or pulling you around the corners. Or acts like it has the brakes on when you let off the throttle. I had one of mine doing that because I was playing with the pre load on the secondary. Trying to get my rpms up after a clutch rebuild and putting everything back to stock. It is down about 600 rpms but it is smooth and comes out of the hole good. Your peak rpms are close with minimal belt slippage. I say run it. By the sounds of it. It is running well. I dont know what the peak rpms should be. My sx 700 is 8300-8400 stock. Not sure how the pipes affect that. At least you have snow to ride. Happy sledding
 
Awesome question! Excited to hear any answers to that. I may call bender and have them send me whatever I need to convert my stock clutch kit to the pipes kit.. I will say I have their kit with mine and just a can and reeds and it was awesome... Very smooth, and 1 of 3 races id beat a 98srx700 with stingers.. Now with no adjustments but jets and tripple pipes and consecutively beat him by a sled ... My mid range pulls like a monster... But bottom end I might as well be starting out in butter... never can get her to hook in any snow condition... But getting better almost loosened tge straps all tge way... Now adjusting my traction bars
 
Well I called bender... I was just gonna change the things they told me ( trying to go the cheapest route)... The difference from their stock kit to the triple pipe kit is their primary spring and their helix... I told him I was running 8600-8700rpm ... I know people have had a hard time with bender ,but I will give them props today.. They said I'm in the right rpm range and that's where it should be and didn't try selling me more parts... This is why I hate used sleds that went from Joe shmo to a few more Joe shcmos then me ... From all I know it was set up with tripple pipes perfect and than taken off real quick and sold to the next guy not knowing... the pipe and manifold have been extremely Clean for 4000mi which always made me wonder if it did have pipes wile the stocker hung up... He said I should be over reving with these pipes and his stock clutch set up...so when I get moldy cash over summer I'm going with yamma 3:16 tonys set up but be happy for now
 
Well verdict is 8dn is what I should have bought... The good year powerstreaks were great until high rpm. low rpm it stayed cool anything over 70-80mph the belt slipped and got hot... 8dn keeps me at 8600rpm, pulls way harder after 3/4 throttle and everything us cool to the clutch... thanks for any help... Sometimes I know the answer just need smacked in the face to fallow threw. ( penny pinching is never good on anything with a motor)!
