90 exciter little power/won't rev

Well I pulled the tank, and made a closed loop of the lines going into the fuel line for now, just to see if it would fix it. Better now, but still barely any power. I ordered a coil, so hopefully that will help. But I did lift the back end, pulled the clutch cover, and spun it up. I'm no expert, but it didn't look right. At slightly over 5000, the belt looks like it is going to fly off the primary, way past flush. I can still only get approx 6400 out of it with it off the ground

When I pulled it over, the coil arced on the recoil side from where the wire comes out of the coil, to the ground in the middle. If I put a plug in that wire to check spark, it doesnt arc at the coil, and the left side wire will never do it. Not sure if that has anything to do with my problem, but it's something. snip

You witnessed what happens when the ground path for the high tension lead (the spark plug end) of the coil isn't grounded. The spark will find a way to ground and usually damage the coil housing in the process. Once the spark finds a path, carbon tracking will form making it easier. Also, keep in mind that compression affectively increases resistance of the spark plug to spark so good spark with the plug resting on the head isn't quite the same as with the plug installed, engine running. That coil could give you fits of intermittent operation.
 
Thanks for the info. I will be replacing the coil on Tuesday, so I hope that will help. But I'm more concerned about the clutching right now, shortly past 5000 with the back off the ground, and the belt is so far up the primary, it's not even holding onto the outside of the belt anymore, it has ahold of the grooves ? Or whatever they are called
 
What is the part number on your belt?? 89X- or a 89L?? Maybe the width is too wide?? What primary clutch are you running?? YPZ, YXR, or Comet?? What part number secondary clutch are you running?? 80L or 88R?? I wonder if you have you have a mixed bag of parts thrown on that sled. At 5,000 RPM you shouldnt be anywhere near the top of the primary. Sounds like multiple issues with your clutching. If you could post some pics of your set up, it would be a great deal of help.
 
Well the belt is an 87x, as is the spare that is in it. The secondary looks to say 80L-00 i believe, And I couldnt find it this time, but I seem to recall the clutch saying YPZ on it somewhere. That is the wrong belt. It is too wide for the clutches. You need an 89X-17641-01-00. This is probably your main issue with your sled.DO NOT buy an aftermarket belt. I have not had good luck with the fitment of aftermarket belts. Plus a yami belt is in most cases less expensive. It could be the angle of the pic but it appears your clutches are not properly aligned as well. Also, that scoop on your air box is upside down. lol. The opening should be on the bottom.

HOLY CRAP!! I didnt see this at first, but that primary clutch is junk!! DO NOT run it until you get a new clutch. I can see the spider is cracked and the cover has a good chunk out of it. That clutch could fly apart at any moment sending shrapnel everywhere and could possibly injure you in the process! Your clutch is far out of balance now and will destroy the crank bearings or the entire crank.
 
I think I'm just gonna cut my loses and sell it. Bare minimum 100 dollars for a clutch it seems, and it might not fix everything. I think I'm gonna look for a vmax sx or sxr for next season
 
Good to see you didnt give up!! Your going to have to re-align and shim your secondary because Phazer clutches have a different off set. Also, you will need to use the weights and spring from your Exciter clutch or you will over rev. You should have 86m or 82m weights i believe.
 
I figured that much. The only thing is, the spring in my clutch is a blue and white. According the the service manual I downloaded, that isn't right for any year exciter from 87-90, so I just wanted to know if I need a different spring
 
So I havent had a chance to actually pull my old clutch and put the new one on, but I did swap the weights and spring over to the new one and clean it up, to get it ready until I can pull it. The only thing is, they both had the same weights in them, 8vo. So is that right for the phazer, or the exciter ?
 
pull the carbs and clean and rebuild with new needle and seats ...since it is a 90 the jetting should be correct ...........next go through the clutches make sure they are clean tight ......to aid in the clutching use 82M weights .....with the long yellow green for the primary .....secondary should be stock helix and pink spring set in b-2 ...should yield a 4200 engagement and run out to 7000 rpms with very good back shift .....

Well I guess if I plan to keep this one any amount of time, I'll have to pick up some parts, because I have none of those. Blue and white primary spring, 8 Vo weights, and white secondary spring is what I have
