I had a couple redhead 700's that had the brass gear slip when hot and a srx also. In all of those recent cases, I could NOT spin the gear even when heated up with a torch and grabbed it with vice grips(knew i was changing it so damage didnt matter to me). Had the cranks repaired and no more cooling problems, i think the load the impellar sees is more then you think especially at 8500rpm.
If your impellar is that tight on the shaft, its likely not slipping, I have only had 1 in all the years have the splines chewed out and it was loose as a goose on the shaft. With it being that tight, its the gear thats causing the trouble...............which sorry to say, means you need the crank redone or another bottomend to replace it with.

Wasn't this a problem on earlier 700 redheads then at some point the crank was updated and they pinned the gear?

I dont think so, at least I dont remember seeing a tech bulletin on it,but what i am about to tell you will say the answer is "no", only because the last redhead engine was a 2001 sxr700.

For being "bulletproof" I'm seeing a lot of redheads going down on here lately. Mine included... Given mine has over 10k miles and still ran quite well. Makes me sad all these old awesome sleds be dying on us. Anybody else think so?

cross my fingers as my 2 yami's have never blown a motor or chaincase or a track right off the skid.Seem to be built very well but maintenance is important.Have over 10,000 miles on the SRX as well and same with the SXR..when and if I finally blow a motor, that will be the day I will put the sled to sleep, out to pasture.Old sleds are money pits for sure and have to draw the line somewhere.

Needed more heat I guess. It fell off and looks fine, so Its most likely the crank causing the overheating. Thanks for the help.
