I have a 97 Yamaha 600 XTC with the single bulb head light. The stock bulb is a H4 55/60 Watt P43T.
I find this single bulb too dim. There are higher wattage bulbs available like the H4 80/100 Watt P43T.
Can I install a 80/100 W bulb?
This circuit is not fused and I don't want to burn the wires or switches.
Are the wire okay for this increase?

Any information would be great.
 
This is what I did on my 99, I put in a Xenon Boosted 55/100 and then put in a LED tailight bulb and it will not dim when you hit the breaks....
 
Hi DHSRX,

By increasing the wattage of the bulb you will be drawing an extra 3 amps on the system when using the high beam.
I will check what gauge wire goes to the head light as well as the limitation
of the electrical system on the sled and get back to you.
I believe the wire to the headlight is 18 gauge which will handle a total of 16amps.

Hell yes, its the only way to run them with the older ignition....most lights will need to be adjusted with rider on the machine tho to get the hi beam in the right place.
 
The guy at the Bluhm booth at the Novi show said that the 80/100 would work but that the electrical system on that vintage sled was lower than the new sleds and there will be dimming issues with the use of the handle bar heater and the brake light.

I opted for the 55/60 Xenon boosted dual color and it looks great.
 
Just to let you know what I found out regarding this light issue.
I was advised by my local Yamaha shop that if I install the 80/100W bulb in my 97 Vmax 600 XTC (single lamp) I would fry the coil. By my quick calulations this is a 3.3 V increase. I guess the question is can the coil handle the increase in amps.

Again any information would great.
 
If you run the combo of the 100/55 and the led type rear bulb you will never fry anything. I have run this on 2 of my sleds for 5000 miles on each sled without any issues.
 
mr sled, does the led tailight bulb draw less than the stock? my light dims when i hit the brake, i have the higher wattage front bulb. how much did you pay for the rear led? thanks

i have the 65/100 watt tinted blue bulb its very bright ,i also have 3 led 1157 bulbs in my taillight u can get these at your local auto store or order them on ebay just type (1157 led light ) about 7.00 dollars each, and 16 led lights under my hood which produces a really cool red glow coming through the vents on my hood>>> they are so bright they light up the snow around my sled heres how i did the hood lights, first i ordered the leds from www.ledsupply.com
now you can go two different ways with the way to power them up i used 2aa rechargeable batteries soldered leds parralel + to + -to- then to switch and batteries you have to check the specs on your leds because diff colors take diff amounts of power they also have a power puck that will run 1 or 2 strings of 12 leds about $20.00 but thats if you have a 12v battery on your sled i also want to change all the guage lights and the gas guage light leds will last over one hundred thousand hours and they dont blow out from bumps etc. thats why i use them heres the link to somes pics of my sled http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/Winslow/winslow.htm
i have more pics i will send them to the webmaster to update the page my graphics are all done ......now all together for an older machine only puttin out maybe 300 watts with hot grips 100 watt headlight ..ive never had one problem and rode about 700 miles last year and alreay up 70 miles this year .... leds are great and they save power Richie :idea:
 
Piaa makes a 80/80 watt bulb that works really well and doesn't put the burden of a 100 watt bulb on the electrical system. Problem is it's kind of expensive. Think I paid $30 for one.
 
what is the overall capacity of the electrical system on a 99 srx? What if I ran a LED light with no heaters and a 100/130 bulb? Would this exceed the capacity of the system? Just curious.
