Well guys. I'm trying to find myself a nice little backup sled and also one the girlfriend could hop on and just make some short runs down the trail with me. I found a few local ones and just wondering what you guys think?

Keep in mind I don't know your girlfriend or her riding ability. Just a quick my .02 cents run threw on your findings. The 97's are twins....I would steer clear of them simply due to the lack of a 3rd spark plug, just me? The 2000 SRX (never heard of his display model 01 color theory) Would be my first choice if I planned on riding it.....no so much for GF. The SxR and Vmax will be very similar to your 97 tripple, SxR having reverse and e start way cool but a little on the pricey side. The blacked out Vmax looks sweet as hell to me...it would be a strong contender for a "back up sled that girlfriend can ride"

04viper. Pm me.

Other than that I test drove the last link. The 97 xtc and it seemed like a great sled with good suspension. At least better than my sx... Said he would take 1200

twins had a few recalls in 97. I had one from new, the oil pump did fail. easy fix, and when it failed it went to FULL rich. went through a ton of oil, but otherwise not a huge issue. I would not be afraid to have another one, but I would call a dealer with the vin to see what was updated and what was still needed. they had a ring recall as well, and a set of bumpers in the rear skid

Yep our 97 venture 6 twin had the ring/ piston update as it apparently had an issue while still under warranty. That said, is got over 8500 mile on it now and pulled 129 psi per cylinder after all those miles. It also had to have a new oil pump on it a couple years ago as it failed full rich like snowx said above. Yes, they are not the best on gas, but pretty reliable and never left me stranded. It needed reds this year, and the primary needed wear parts, but it's really been turn key.

That's what I like to hear, neighbor has your exact sled, thinking he may sell it cheap and I want one for me and the kids!

Thanks man. The one I rode was the last link.. The one for 1450.. I think he will take 1200, so its right in my budget. Also its very clean, engine bay looks great, shocks are all rebuilt. New pistons and rings 1000 miles ago. New 1 1/4 track... He also had paperwork for a new oil and fuel pump from around 2000.. I'm guessing that may have been the recall?

If you look at the ad it seems to be good to go, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Here it is.

Looks and sounds good. Those braces were a recall as well, forgot about that. If you like it,I wouldn't be too afraid of it

700 is a MUCH nicer motor, power wise and it is super smooth. Probably been ridden harder though

Thanks everyone. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on The 97 xtc 600... Guy did a lot of work and worst case scenario is if the motor goes I see a lot of 600s available for 500 and they Dont seem to bad to repair... If the sled lasts 3000 miles I'd be more than satisfied. Thats about 4 seasons for me.. And for $1200 that would give me some time to save up for a new one lol... I wish I could find a nice apex or nytro, but maybe during the summer I'd have A chance to find a good one

And if nothing else, usually isn't too hard to find a decent redhead motor ;) good luck and have fun!

yes it would. one of our overseas members put a sx700 motor in an sx500r sled. the whole swap is documented in here.
