A friend of mine just bought a new viper this year and guess what happened on the lake today? He got rocked by the srx with 14yr old technology:) I just laughed at him and said it looked nice though!!I even have a bent trailing arm!

It might be 14 years old,but its still a pure breed yamaha:sled2:(Those pro-cross chassis hold up a lot of wind, saw it myself a few weeks ago when I beat a 7000 and a turbo 1100 longtracks by 3mph on top end on my warrior.GPS verified)

The YamaCat 2014+ Vipers are sub 90 mph sleds...even turbocharged they are hard pressed to break 110mph.
Stock [PURE YAMAHA!!!]Apexs are a different story!

So are the new vipers slower than the 08 and up nytro?. I had 104 gps and radar gun on my 08 all stock nytro.. Seems to be mixed stories out there... I ran 98 mph in 1000' sno race on my nytro too, but 99mph on 01' srx same day

Ish. I just did some jetting on my old mod Phazer last week and hit 80 on gps during short runs. Real world 90 shouldn't be too far off.

They do look good especially the 2015 with the new paint scheme but they aren't fast. To my understanding this pro cross chassis eats horsepower as did the previous cat chassis. Even turbo'd that extra 50hp the sled just breaks the 100 mph mark so it seems like a little too much money to invest for me. Personally. I don't believe yamaha should of named it the "viper" I think a previously used name like exciter or even the gpx would of been better suited the viper name should of been saved and used for a chassis that yamaha actually builds. Just my opinion. Now given the choice of the cat version or the yamaha version certainly the yamaha is the way to go. Cats clutching and the mapping and the rest of the upgrades needed to make the sled carry the yamaha badge certainly make the yamaha version the superior choice. Again just my opinion.

a little embarrassing I would say for Yamaha..The purchase price for these newer sleds are insane.Imagine our 12 year old sleds can still compete with the new and still beat them.Yamaha should go back to the drawing board and make just pure Yami's or they will loose the 4th spot for sled sales and then there was three manufacturers left..just my opinion of course.

They dont care about top speed. Trail handling suspension always looses to top speed on a lake. I too wish they would have something faster and lighter.

I've been doin a lot of reading on the 4 stroke side and lots of guys are saying they will break 100mph as it gets broken in...lots of them are still being broken in so they can't go too fast just yet. My buddies nytro gets faster every year, he's at 13000km on his engine. I'm sure they'll do just fine once they are set up right and fully broken in...I'm not a fan of the cat chassis but I hear it's working good and again once it's set up properly they soak up the bumps pretty good! I'm not one who needs to go super fast anyways..100mph is fast enough IMO. I want comfort, power & a reliable engine, just something we all want! Lol but these srxs don't have the comfort.

I heard the same thing about top end not being their, I am sure miles will help loosen up the engine, but most everyone that has a Viper or SRX bought them because they prefer to be the first one across the lake or straight away. It's true I welcome the big bump capability that the new Viper has but still prefer speed over big bump capability. I also agree Yamaha should have choosen a diffrent name for the new Viper, it does not live up to the name unless you stick a 2,000 dollar turbo on it, and that may not do it .........
Maybe its just me, but I have a hard time spending 12-15,000 on a car or truck, let alone a snowmobile I can ride 4-6 weeks out of the year if I am lucky.
I don't think I am Yamaha's target customer anymore :)

you are not comparing apples to apples either. A move fair comparison would be between a 2004 Viper and a 2014 Viper. Horsepower to horsepower. Or a SRX to an Apex. But nevertheless, Put 14" of suspesnsion and a 1.25 track on the SRX. I suspect the "drag" race would be extreamly close. Now, add in a set of moguls 22" high. That old SRX would be wooped. I like the older sleds, I really do. But, the new chassie are so much better in the bumps. Yes, I would like to see another 2 stroke as well, but that is a dream unrealized. Al

The 1.25 track on my srx is nice, but there's definitely not 14.5" of travel there! I'll save the srx for when I know the groomer has just been out! Would like something else to help soak up the bumps when they rough out there!

Im glad I read some posts from realistic snowmobilers......the SRX and old Vipers have their place, but its not on a typical beat up Michigan trail system....and thats what I ride. I would take a new Viper over a brand new SRX any day for my type of riding, I could care less about sitting out on a lake to see if my sled (not the rider) is faster then the other guys. Keep convincing yourselves that the old Iron is King, and the guys enjoying the new school sleds will keep smiling as they comfortably blast down the beat up trails.
Keep in mind Ive owned a SRX and an 04 Viper S , so I know very well what they are capable of.

My dealer just did 114mph on gps on a boosted new viper the other day and it wasn't strung all the way out. And it rides 100 times better. Say what you want but they are a bad *** sled

It cost viper owners 2 grand for there 2 stroke viper to run with a srx so there is some merit to the name.

beet one in a 660 snow drag with our vmax last weekend. Nice looking sled but old iron still holds there own
