Exciter 650 psi genesis honing

hey guys, I picked up an old yamaha exciter with a 650 psi genesis kit in it and its seized up. I want to take it apart and hone the cylinders (minor surface rust in one). I was just wondering, whats the best tool to use for these? I know there are a few options but Im not sure what would work best. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
 
Ok Kenzie, Spill the beans!! From our last conversation I know you are not too far from my location. How did I miss this sled???? LOL. You will need a rigid hone. You will need to check the cylinder to piston clearance after you hone it. It has to be spot on or the motor will rattle like hell because the PSI pistons were forged pistons from wiseco. I hope you dont need pistons because you will most likely not find them.
 
It was in madison on craigslist. pretty sweet deal. thanks for the advice though. I'm very inexperienced with honing engines and I'm not quite sure what it would cost to get one but it needs to be done so I should find a way somehow. I've read in a couple places that the yamaha 650 watercraft pistons fit the kit. I'm sure if they do but I guess there's a way to find out.
 
I never thought about the 650 watercraft engines!! You may have given me an idea to make my own 650 exciter. I think I would start with Vmax 600 cylinders though. Im assuming the 650 you have is a reed engine like the Exciter 650 I saw for sale about 6 years ago in Indiana. I almost made the trip to pick that one up. You got any pics of this bad boy??
 
yes, it does have reeds. It's a piece of work for now but I can combine my other exciter (with a blown engine) and it should be a pretty beastly sled. seems like the guy put a lot into it. Here's what i've noticed it's had so far

psi kit (engine, twin pipes, and 44 mm carbs)
temperature gauges
hydraulic brakes (nice addition)
comet 108 clutch
Aftermarket track with slightly bigger paddles and studs
skid is placed higher in the tunnel for racing
and the t.s.s. front suspension

Thats friggen cool!! It appears to be an 88. The skid is from an SRV or vmax, possibly a 91 or newer exciter. I think the skid was thrown in there as a replacement because the rear arm geometry isnt quite right and I question how well it works like that. That is why it is sitting a bit lower in the rear.
The carbs appear to be stock exciter carbs because of the nipples for the coolant lines. My guess is that they are bored to 39.5mm. I would like the jetting specs when you get around to cleaning them.
Make sure to take note of all the tuning parts in the clutch and gearing in the chain case. It will make it much easier to dial in when you get it running, if you have to replace worn items.

the carbs are stock with 39.5 mm bore. I was going by what the guy said in the previous post. But the jetting specs are

Main 400
PJ 42.5
nozzle R-2 166
air screw 1.5 turns out

I have yet to check the needles, I'll get to it later because it's all EXTREMELY dirty and nasty.

Lots of work done. Took engine completely apart. It's all together now and in the good sled. Took the parts sled apart. Now the engine is coming out so all of the "add ons" can go in (temp gauges, gearing 18 31, hydraulic brakes, stud protectors, exciter 2 skid) The only part I'm not sure about is the flywheel, I heard that at high rpms with the twin pipes that it causes a lean issue? The stock flywheel is on now but I have electric start ones (heavier) which I believe get rid of the harmonic imbalance? Great thread Kenzie!! If you look at your water pump pulley, I bet you have the PSI inner sheave. All it is, is a heavier back half of the pulley and adds weight to your flywheel. If you have the time, could you post what needle you have in the carbs??
 
I picked up an old PSI catalog today and found that it had this motor in it. PSI claimed 115hp with the set up you have. The cases do indeed need to be machined for the bigger sleeve as well as case port matching from what I can see. The head is a re-worked stock head as I suspected. The entire kit including the pipes sold for $2495.00 in 1993. They did offer a billet head that you could buy too for $395.00
I was expecting a bit more power since the RPC 570 I have is supposed to be around 112hp. My guess is that the 650 has a wider torque curve and better usable low end grunt due to the addition of the reeds.
