Looking to mill my head, redhead 700. Has anyone done this on here? If so what specs to follow and did you have to change carb settings? Appreciate the help!
 
I have all of our red heads milled .020. This is similar to removing one layer of the head gasket. No need to rejet if this is the only mod. Al
 
so what squish clearance do you have in your engine now currently, and what fuel octane do you run all the time?

also do you have triple pipes on this engine?
 
Going to be running Bender triple pipes, should I stay with the factory head gasket, will be running 91 fuel. What squish is best for trail riding?

you can either mill the head or peel the gasket, you accomplish the same thing either way you do it. I would keep it around .055-.057" squish clearance for pumpgas 91 octane.
 
Thanks Don for the response. If the gasket you remove is .012" thick and the squish you stated in the previous post is stock then by running a stock head gasket it should put the squish somewhere around .067 to .070? How much hp would you really lose by running that loose of squish? I understand that you are going to lose some low end and throttle response but I'm willing to give up some hp to be trail safe. Up here in Canada you aren't always guaranteed good 91. Reason I went with Bender pipes is that they aren't a tight pipe so they should have more forgiveness than other pipes? Again I could be all washed up but this is my thinking.
 
no,no.., .055-.057" is what i would adjust it to, stock will be way more then that. Those engines are loose stock. Youll need to check your squish on yours to see where you are at and adjust from there down towards that figure i gave out.
 
So no problem down to .057 even running bender pipes? That is where I'm at presently with the center gasket removed. So guys running only 1 head gasket must have very tight squish!!!

ya it tightens up alot with only 1 layer definitely not safe with todays gas as you dont know the quality of the fuel anymore, they say its 91 or 93 octane but it doesnt guarantee thats what you get from the hose. With pipes your gonna have richer fuel settings all the way thru,pilot,needle and mains so you should be able to tune it in and be just fine.
Theres always the cheap insurance to add octane boost, I use it in my bone stock sleds these days, will keep the edge off and its a whole lot cheaper then pistons!
