Hey everyone. I have a friend that we recently got into the sport this year and he has a 98 srx 700 and it could use some new rings as the compression is a little lower than I'd like to see. He hasn't ridden his sled yet (no snow yet) so he is thinking cheap and wondering if he can just change the rings without buying new pistons, wrist pins, cage bearings, etc as long as these things are in good shape. We haven't opened the top end yet so I don't know what pistons are in it, but is it normally okay to buy say parts unlimited rings and put on whatever pistons are in the motor? Thanks for any pointers!

Its ok if they are the same size, like for example if it has wiseco pistons in it, the stock yamaha rings wont fit as the wiseco uses a thinner ring then the stock yamaha does. It comes down to what brand pistons are in it, if stock yamaha they will say 8dn on the bottom of them

If it has the OEM pistons, use oem rings.

Yamaha Parts are superior to after market, change piston and rings minimum, don't cheap out, I have a 98 that has 12,000 on it and hasn't needed new rings and pistons yet.
