Starter Rope Replacement

Take it to your Dealer if you haven't had the "update" "plastic insert" installed that the rope passes through on the chaincase housing. All the ropes were wearing thin (and breaking) due to the poor design and there should be a bulletin on it. Rope & fix should be Free, plastic part free too.

The hardest part of replacing the rope is tightening the spring. I trick i found is to coil it tight in your hands then put a plactic zip tie to keep it together, then place it in the housing and cut the strap. Give it a try it worked really well for us.
 
My opinion its not worth loading up and taking to the dealer unless you have other work that needs to be done. Changing the rope is basic. Pull the cover off and its self explanitory on how it work. Viper ropes break a lot if you don't have the little plastic insert. Just order one from the dealer next time your there, they cost about $2 and takes 30 seconds to fix.
 
yea i just broke the spring on my sxr a couple weeks ago, winding those things up takes some patience
 
My '03 viper has it's rope ready to break also, asked the dealer about insert and bulletin from Yamaha and he can't find any info about this...where can I find this info to show him?
