2001 VMax Deluxe 500 twin question

Picked up a 2001 vmax 500 deluxe for my son. Battery was dead, tach, reverse beeper, and fuel gauge didn't work, kill switch broke off.
Replaced Battery. Tach, beeper, and fuel gauge all work fine.
Changed the bad handgrips and throttle/kill switch assembly (used).
Everything worked fine.
2 days go by and new battery is dead. Key was off.

Thoughts? Shouldn't the tach work if battery was dead?

sounds like it has a bad starter solenoid as everything else should need the motor running to work.

oe installed heated grips or aftermarket

if they are aftermarket installed, they might be direct to battery and need to be turned off separately.

They are OEM handlegrips. Would a bad starter solenoid drain the battery? I would think that the stator or charging system? would run those items when it is running. Just like a non electric start version of the same sled, you know? Baffled here.

make sure that switch is in the off position.if switch is like one we had it would shut off but battery would die in couple of days.wish I could remember how we figured it out but something to look at.if not sure if switch bad use kill switch when shutting off.still have machine and switch I think if not in right position it left battery in on position machine would shut off but I think it left the contact to starter on over time the relay would drain battery.hope this makes sense

i have seen it happen before when they get old.

sounds like you should be cleaning up all the grounds on the sled anyways but there should be no spark at all when you touch the battery cable to the terminal with the ign turned off.

put a volt meter acoss the batter when the sleds running should be 13.2 v dc if its not the srfaces on the stater might be corroded and not making the electrical engergy needed to run the sled .
