Phazer 2 Crank Bearing damage

I have a spare engine bottom end for my Phazer.
Went to install new crank seals today and this is what I found.
Bearings are lined also the lower crank case where the center bearings seat.
What causes this?
I take it the bearings and case are toast?

I don't know what causes that, but I had a little bit of that in the case at the center bearings on mine too. I don't remember seeing it on the bearings though. I put in a new reman crank and used the cases, I just made sure there were no high spots.

 
Bearing chatter. Fretting. That is from a crank,clutch,or flywheel that is out of true or balance, excessively worn bearings, high milage, an engine that has seen a lot of high RPM, or all of the above. Double check that your bearings are good and dont have any excess slop or crunchy sounds when you roll them. If it seems they are useable, knock down the high spots with a razor, then smear red loctite on the bearings and cases where the damage is. This will keep the bearings tight and keep the damage from getting worse. Throwing a dial indicator at it wouldnt be a bad idea either.

The bearing on the PTO do seem loose so will probably get the crank checked and new bearings, keep the crank as a spare.
This was from the engine that come in the sled when I got it, it had a hard life for sure.
I put a different engine in the sled , pulled that out today and will put the new seals in that.

I have seen this on many early Yamaha's through the 80's and 90's on many models especially fan cooled. Skidoo used a thin o-ring on their crank bearings and the problem was much less prevalent on their cranks. Years ago some Yamaha techs would put a couple of wraps of Teflon tape around the bearings as a short term fix. For a more permanent fix they suggested using a thin smear of Yamabond or permatex crankcase sealant on the bearing seats in the crankcase halves when installing the crank. I use it routinely on all my older rebuilds.
 
You see that more in twins then anything but triples will also do it under the right circumstances, as long as the bearings are good and the case is not heavily damaged a little bit of loktite will solve it and be good for thousands of miles.
