ss440 dies after it runs for a while

i have a 81 ss440 which iv been restoring got it going this summer n idles great and runs great at first but after about a mile it will die out then go then die then go usually it will just go to a low idle but sometimes dies completely but will start up right away i have a see though fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb and it doesnt seem to keep much if any fuel in it i filled that line to get the air out and after i started it it quickly drained out ...
so to keep it short how much fuel should the pump be putting out and what else could the issue be?

it has all new fuel lines and a good clean carb
 
sounds like you need a fuel pump or at least a new pulse line from the bottom of the motor. my bet is on the pulse line as i have had a few rot out over the years.
 
I know nothing about the ss440 but I do know if a tank vent can't breath, kinked or plugged, it will starve for fuel and run for awhile and quit. Next time it stalls out pull the fuel cap and listen for a hiss of air entering the tank.
 
Filter it the fuel tank.

Check it and the line from it up to the top.

The same crud that plugs carbs can eff up that filter. Could be limiting fuel flow.

Pull it, check it out and replace with OEM.

My 74 SL does the same thing. It has an aftermarket fuel filter between the squeeze bulb and the carb. If I resqueeze the bulb to fill that line, it runs again, until it runs out. Like it isn't drawing, or something.
