Alright, so the deal is, I'm trying to get a exciter 570 project sled together to run but it doesn't seem to want to run. It has spark I can easily see, good compression, and fuel. I don't understand why it wont even fire even when I prime it? Extremely rarely it fires for a split second. That's it. Can anyone help on what could be wrong? Its an 89 electric start. I replaced the flywheel in it with a 1990 exciter flywheel (non electric start) because the flywheel is chipped in the teeth. Would that make a difference? :dunno:
 
i don't think its a flywheel problem. you need 3 things. fuel,compression,fire. have you cleaned the carbs? is it flooding out which has filled up your crank case from leaky needle & seat? these carbs are well know for this. i had the exact same problem with my 87 570. good place to start is cleaning the carbs and replacing needle and seat. make sure float height is correct, make sure floats aren't sunk wile your in there. might be overkill but maybe a fuel pump rebuild kit for 6 dollars just to rule it out. make sure the crankcase isn't filled up. if this is the case it will never run till its emptied out. (will keep overflooding the plugs) ask me how i know. hope it helps
 
Probably flooded. Shut the fuel valve off, take the plugs out and pull it over until you fall over, then pull some more to purge any excess fuel out of the bottom end. You can take the pulse line off too before doing this as well. How fresh is the fuel your using??
 
Carbs are cleaned as i have went through them and replaced things as needed. I tested the fuel pump and even replaced it. Put the carbs on another exciter of mine even ran fine. If it were flooded, wouldnt fuel come out of the spark plug areas when i pull it over without any plugs in it? The fuel is probably 2 weeks old by now. Its new stuff.
 
if you put 2 nice and dry spark plugs in it and then crank it over a few times, then remove the plugs, are they wet?
 
If you are certain of everything that you have checked, Im going with bad crank seals. When was the last time this motor was known to run?? Are you certain you have good compression that was verified with a gauge??
 
Ill have to check the dry plugs idea. And the compression was roughly 115 both sides. And when i replaced the flywheel i checked the seals which looked fine and didn't have signs of leakage around them. The motor hadn't been run for maybe a year.
 
If your plugs are dry dump a little fuel down the holes, or into the carbs and see if it fires. Might take a few times before it stays running, that is if everything else is ok. If the plugs are wet shut off the gas, pull the plugs and turn it over till nothings spitting out the holes, put in dry plugs and turn it over with the throttle to the bars.
 
Alright. Thank you guys, it was flooded. So i unflooded it, ran the engine to try to unflood and it just flooded again. Any common reason for it? Ill tear it apart this weekend.

Speaking of them though, on the older exciters, instead of a needle and seat, it was like a ball and seat. How well did these work? (Jw because I have a couple good pairs of those laying around, I just never thought of using them since they were on the old style carburetors)

your best bet is the same as others told me when i had this problem. buy new viton needle and seat. well worth the 20 a piece i paid on ebay. i can post a link of where to buy. make sure there the right style and flow rate of 1.5 . more then happy to help anyway i can :>)

I believe what you are talking about are gross jets. They wont work on your exciter.
 
Thanks guys. Seemed to be flooded obviously, i took it all apart again and found that the needle on the mag side had actually fallen out because the little metal ring broke somehow. So i had a needle at the bottom of the float bowl. That was definitely a first for me!
