My 2001 SRX 600 Triple

I just joined the forum a few months ago when I bought my '98 VMax 600. Shortly thereafter, I was in the market for a 2nd sled for friends and family to ride. Then I found the SXR, and after the first ride it was my new primary sled (the VMax is now for guests to ride.)

It has an M10 suspension under it, and at the time of purchase it was running a little rough because it had been sitting for three years. I took it home and went through the carbs, installed some new plugs, and she's running great.

I had read about so many people against triples, but wow...the sound of this thing, and the pull it has over the 600 twin just sucked me in. I love it.

So I'll be posting a few questions about it as things come up, and I'll appreciate any help I can get!
 
Dang it...I typed SRX in the title knowing full well it's an SXR. Too easy to do. If a mod has a moment, perhaps you could change my title?
 
So on to the stuff... I learned that my speedometer isn't working. With the rear end lifted up and the cable pulled from the speedo, track running, the cable isn't spinning. Next I'll go into the drive shaft bearing area to see what's going on in there, I understand that the speedo's quit working often when a drive shaft bearing is wearing out.

While I was in there, I discovered that my primary clutch has some missing material...I'm thinking "not a big deal" but wanted some more experienced eyes to advise me on it. What do you think? It looks like perhaps someone broke out some of the thin material blocking it with a pipe or something, but maybe it happened in operation?

I figure that's the case, but if it's broken, everything I've read says it's probably due to a faulty driveshaft bearing in the first place. We'll take it apart and see what's going on...

Valid considerations, thanks. I'll see how cheap I can get around this one, whether it's finding an outer housing used or a whole new (used) primary.
 
I had a chip out of my clutch, looked like the previous owner dropped it. So what I did was make the smallest possible square cut out of the damaged side, then measured, marked and cut the exact same amount out of the other 2 sides in same position. Mines been running like this for 6000 km. btw you clutch looks really dirty. Look and see if you have any broken engine mounts.

I think I'll replace it, but re: dirty clutch, dirty in what way? The sled was sitting for three years, so I can see where some of that corrosion on the sheaves would come from. What else are you seeing and why would it point to engine mounts? I mean, I get that a broken mount would mean alignment issues...

Also, what's the best way to check motor mounts? Seem's like they'd be buried deep in there...just wiggling the engine?

Well, in your picture I see alot of black scuff marks on the clutch face. I sheered and engine mount on the pto side and my clutch looked the same.
 
OK, thanks. I'll look into it.

The worst thing about buying a 13 year old sled is not knowing what has been maintained, what is due to wear out normally, and what has been let go to the point of failure. I could spend what I paid for the sled in the first place going through it and replacing all kinds of parts on a preventative-maintenance basis. Just have to take these things on one at a time and prioritize.

Ideally, I'd like to ride without a lot of work this winter, then start putting some real time into going through things this coming summer.
 
The sled shows 5,800 miles on the odo, but the speedometer has been broken for at least this long:

The shaft is grooved about 1/8" deep. How long would you guess it's driven since the speedo key broke?

Which leads up to my real question about the 600 triple: Mine is at 5800 + your estimate. Where does that put me in the lifespan of this engine?
 
My friends 600 triple just broke 23000 km. they don't even winterized their machines or even really let them warm up and it's still going strong. You're just broke in at that millage!

Yikes, it appears the damage had already been done long before I bought it. I had noticed a rattling sound when the sled was shut off and thought it was perhaps the clutch making noise.

I had it into a shop fixing the driveshaft bearing issue then we started discussing the rattling noise. The mechanic now believes I have a pretty bad crankshaft bearing. He'll let me know for sure tomorrow after he takes the primary off, but now that I think about it, I'm certain it's the crank bearings.

Sled didn't turn out to be such a good deal after all...
 
If its outter crank bearings not that big of a deal. Inner bearings when crank has to come apart get pricey pretty quick. Keep us up to speed on developments.
 
So far, there is some good news...

When I bought the sled with no working speedo / odo, I mentioned that I was concerned: The motor could have 10,000 miles or more on it as far as I knew. The seller said he'd stand behind that motor, and if there was a problem he had another 600 triple motor.

I Contacted him tonight, and he says he'll make good on it. He also says he has another clutch. I showed him the clutch pic and let him know it was probably why we have a bad crank bearing.

Now just need to figure out how we'll approach this...

Looks like you were on to something there roudyroy1. I'd guess a bad crankshaft bearing could cause the black scuff marks.
