Does anyone know what the steps are to remove a jackshaft from a 2001 srx? It's the shaft that the secondary is on. Thanks

Remove secondary.
Take airbox off.
Drain chaincase oil, drain plug on the back inside tunnel.
Take cover off.
Remove gears and chain.
Take the cable off the parking brake pads,2 cotter pins
Take 4 bolts out of inner chaincase half.
Remove 2 bolts on the bearing retainer on clutch side of jack shaft.
Slacken the track tension all the way off.
Pull the chaincase inner half and the brake disc off all at once, use a soft hammer or pry bar to start the disc off the shaft and the case off the axle.
Look out for the key for the disc.
Pull the shaft out through the chaincase side.

Take lots of pictures before you take things apart, especially if it's your first crack a this.

If you feel confident enough you can take the parking brake pads apart from the chaincase housing but it's a real pain to get the springs all back in the correct places if you haven't done it before. This is where lots of pictures comes in handy. It just makes it a little easier to pull the inner case half off, then remove the brake disc and pull the shaft out.

You actually don't have to remove the chaincase to get the jackshaft out, I just changed mine. after I removed the chain and upper gear I slid a piece of pipe in as I was pulling the jackshaft out, that holds the brake rotor in place.

you dont have to ever take the parking brake asembly apart, if you change the track or change the jackshaft you can simply just pull the chaincase out along with the brake rotor, as mentioned dont loose the key for brake rotor. You can literally take the brake rotor off and it will slip right back into place in between the parking brake pads.

I have a 98 that has excessive rotational rotor play, if its just the key whats the best procedure to remove and replace the key stock?

usually it will be the hub of the brake rotor that is worn, you can either get another brake rotor off any year srx or viper or get a aluminum brake hub from bender and replace the steel one on your original. The newer srx from 2001-02 and any year viper have a lightweight brake rotor so its a worthwile upgrade since you have it apart.

So what is the the best method to inspect the rotor hub to verify its the failure prior to tear down? Can I remove the top drive sprocket and loosen the secondary jack shaft bearing lock and slide the shaft to the secondary side to expose the key and key way on the rotor hub? And if the rotor has to be replaced if I understand correctly the best way is to remove the entire chain case assembly?

If you can rock the rotor back and forth any more than 1/4 or a inch the keyway is worn and the chaincase will have to be removed for jackshaft removal.I don't think you can slide the jackshaft towords the clutch as there is a step in the shaft behind the bearing.

its not a hard job, doesnt take gobs of time. youll need to:
drain the chaincase
remove the muffler
remove chaincase cover and nut and bolt holding chain and sprockets on
find it alot easier to loosen up the track tension via the rear adjsuters also
then remove the 2 bolts for the brake caliper and lift up and out of the way.
theres 4 bolts holding the chaincase to the frame remove those and then the whole thing will slip off the shafts, grab the whole works, brake rotor, case and wiggle it and pull out. Sometimes you need to give it some love taps via a plastic hammer against the rotor side to get it off the shaft if its rusty.
DO NOT touch the parking brake assembly if you dont want to make up new cuss words trying to get the springs back in....lol

I second not touching the parking brake assembly. When I got my srx the previous owner changed the parking brake assembly and it did not work when I got it. Got to looking and found the springs were not right. Definitely not fun to get them in the correct spot. Good thing there was no kids around as they would have learned a lot of new words. lol

SRX brake problem
Well I got it apart, 45 minutes not bad at all! The key is slightly worn and the key ways are fine. The problem is the steel rotor is multi piece and spot welded the rotor over heated and popped some of the welds causing it to wobble and I could feel it pulsing in the brake handle. I would like to find a aluminum one. Heading to the bone yard tomorrow. a new steel one is $300.00 "nope" Thanks for the tips.

any year pro action chassis will interchange on the brake rotor, but if you can find a 2001-02 srx or any year viper rotor. They are better and lighter.

Thanks again for the information, are the newer ones all aluminum or just the hub?

the newer ones are still steel but just lighter, and thats rotating weight. The only aluminum part that is sold is the center brake hub, I think bender racing still has them, but you have to buy the hub for the year brake rotor you use as they have a differnt bolt circle (where the rivets are on the stock one), 97-2000 are the big one and 2001-05 are the small one.
by the look of yours i would definitely upgrade to the newer style.
