What are, if any, benefits to changing the roller diameter in the primary clutch? My 97 vmax 600 is in need of a rebuild. The motor is not stock anymore, thin head gasket, ported, twin pipes.Wondering if I should change the diameter.

that sled should have 14.5mm rollers.Stick to that.Bigger the rollers less belt grab and I believe higher rpm range from engagement to shift out..then you probably will have to change weights and/or add more tip weight to the weights.Others can chime in on this
Thanks for the reply. The Vmax is a XT and came with 15.6 stock. The 600 SX and many others came with 15mm stock. It has a Maximum Performance clutch kit installed which worked pretty good. Last year the porting was done and never did get it dialed in. Come to find out the clutch needs a rebuild...bad roller. Don't know how I overlooked that. I normally disassemble and clean the clutches every year. I have other weights, springs, helixes I want to try. Since I need new rollers ...should I change the size?

ok just checked out specs for that sled.It did come with 15.6mm rollers,8CR-17605-10-00(weights),w-s-w primary spring.red secondary spring at 60 wrap. Now if you are ported, you will be making more power and higher rpm.You will have to add more tip weight to the weights to get rpm to desired spot. Now if you go down in roller size, the clutch will clamp the belt more and lower rpm a little.Guess you will have to test..test ..test things to see.

Just curious where you find the standard specs? I've got a 98 Vmax 700 XT and want to know the standard roller size and spring color for my primary. Thanks!

Look at the top of the page. Click on TY Tech, then go to stock Yamaha snowmobile specs. There is a lot of good info in the tech section.Just curious where you find the standard specs? I've got a 98 Vmax 700 XT and want to know the standard roller size and spring color for my primary. Thanks!
