I needed to replace my head gasket (o-rings) on the pto side of my 01' SRX 700. It has been ported and the head cut, and I was told to stay with the stock jets. The piston has 1100 miles since new, but only about 150 since the motor work. What do you guys think? It's pretty black around the edges except for the front (exhaust) and two very small marks on the back where the intake ports come in. I thought maybe I should go up a jet size. I reused the old o-rings and this one dripped very slightly. I found a small nick and have new ones ordered. This is probably the first piston I really looked at to see the "wash", so any info would be nice. Thanks.

jetting
looks like the oilpump is pretty rich, I can see the wash marks slightly on the rear, and since I did the porting, yes, the stock 01 jets are fine. With the low temps you guys get up there it will be fine, remember, a srx has a very broad fuel curve, you can make the same amount of hp a couple jet sizes each way, you want to be just on the edge of the rich side if you want it to be trouble free and live! lean the oil down a tad and make sure the powervalves are set correctly, let it rip! btw- what do you have in it for clutching?

don i think im having the same problem.. how do you turn your oil pump down??? its seems to be very smokey when at idle. this is with the jet specs you gave me which is 2 sizes richer on the mains

oilpump setting
you just increase the gap a couple mm's on the oilpump cable adjuster. the main jets have absolutely no effect on how much it smokes at idle, it is running on the idle circuit with pilot jet. When you port a motor you increase the duration of the port timing and therefore its getting more fuel charge at the entire engine run time. Nothing to worry about, set your guys oilpump to 23mm gap and let it rip!!
BTW- amsoil seems to be working the best for me, the yamalube smokes alot and really doesnt offer that good of protection, the engines are much dryer inside with yamalube then with amsoil. just my .02 !!

I'm amazed Don, how did you know you did this motor. I bought this sled from Dave C. and only talked to you once on the phone, but my name isn't ejcamaro of coarse. I thought you were full of it till I looked on the hand written jetting sheet I got from Dave and it was indeed signed by Don!!!! So I am truly shocked and I learned what your name is on TY. I have Benders heel clicker clutch kit for ported SRX's and it seems to be on the money. Max RPM I have seen is just over 8500, then it settles to about 8450. I will adjust the pump as you say. One question on temp. I seem to be running fairly warm (160-180) on the trail, would you recommend Benders tunnel cooling kit for their big bores? Also my egt's are running the same temp at half throttle as full throttle (about 1150 where they are installed). Is that normal to run the same temp through that broad of a RPM range. I am running 93 octane with Amsoil interceptor. I have also adjusted the powervalves. Thanks again, its the quickest sled I've owned.

coolers, egt temps, and clutching....
your not running hot. The thermostat begins to open at 116 degrees and fully opens at 142 degrees, your not running hot at 160-180 degrees, probally just on marginal snow, I dont see a problem there. If for a piece of mind, you can make sure all the coolers are the same temp after riding it and also that you have a 60/40 mixture of anti freeze and water. Sometimes you can get a air lock and they wont circulate the coolant properly, but they have a bleed hole in the thermostat and it goes up at the top of the housing. As far as egt's go, looking at the pistons, you are not running lean, so judge the egt's by the piston wash and the color of the plugs first, then whatever the temp reading is go by that number, it depends on where and who's probe you have as to what the temps are going to be, if you move the probe a 1/2" the readings will go bonkers from the next guys, dont worry about the number, your sled may be 1150, the next guys number might be 1300, depends on where and who's probe it is., once you have established safe jettting and piston wash/plug color, then monitor that numbers. Nothing wrong with heel clickers, they work great, I run them in my own personal srx as well, be safe...

Cool deal, you still didn't tell me how you knew that was a motor you did! How does a Bender can affect the jetting on your ported motors? Thanks again.

secret....
I looked in my crystal ball and saw it.....lol!!!
The bender can will not effect jetting, have never, ever seen a silencer do it. but they do take a whisker off the top end, but thats up to you, if you want it loud and dont care about topend speed, run it!!

It was just that a bender can will give me the room for my nitrous tank (cash flow pending). I'm still amazed but glad you knew it. Now I know who to direct my questions to!
