Dropping 1 tooth on top Gear SRX 700

after doing some research on stock gearing for my 2000 SRX 700 i am going to drop to a 21 tooth gear from the 22 tooth, i feel this will work great with my current clutch set up and new RipSaw, anybody else out there drop to a 21 tooth gear............Reaper
 
My 99 came with a 23/37 setup. I installed a 21 after my conversion to a 136 1.5 and was disappointed with the lack of top end. I just got back this weekend after I installed a 22 tooth, and was very happy with the results with the 22. I didn't top it out but it was still accelerating at 110 with the 22. And accelaration with the 1.5 track is incrediable on the trails / ditches / and lakes with alot of snow. Depending on what your gearing is I wouldn't go more than a single tooth on top unless its really short dragging, or in the mountains. I'm sure their are other opinions on this subject but thats my 2 cents.
 
Docker, thanks for the info, but do you think your fresh engine and new clutching might have contributed to your gains in performance, i saw other post........Reaper
 
Yeah I agree, but I went to a 21 tooth 3 seasons ago with 4000 less miles and with a studded short track. And at that time I was diappointed because it was just geared to low. It would wind out, then the tach would start climbing. I didn't feel I gained any acceleration in that set-up either maybe down low- but in the real world of ripping across the lake with the buddies that set-up never shined. (Why beat'em to 65mph then lose to 90mph when you can run with them to 115mph and then pass him on top end). (At the time I was running with a buddie with a new mach-z 800). I was even gonna go back to the 23 but the stock gear looked like it was gonna fail after so many miles. I went with the 22 for the SRX cuz my fat ass and the big track under the sled needed all the help it could get. Thats why I went to the 22. After seeing the gains from refreshening the motor I would have even went with the stock 23. Good talking to ya reaper.
 
correction I installed that 21 the season before my conversion and left it in there after the conversion. sorry about that.....to many changes to keep straight.
 
So the 99's have 23 tooth stock and the 00' have 22 tooth stock, is that right?, Mr. Sled what your thoughts on this gearing question...........Reaper
 
98-99 has 23/37 00-02 has 23/38 If you drop your top gear 1 or 2 teeth you will also need a 68 link chain.If you go up 2 teeth on bottom gear you can still use your stock 70 link chain.22/38 would be 1.73 ratio.23/40 would be 1.74 ratio.Lot cheaper to change bottom gear and the ratio is almost identical.I have a 22 top and a 40 bottom if you are interested in either of them.Both are almost new.Only used for maybe a mile testing.
 
I went all over the board on my 99. Was down to 20/39 at one point. I now run a 22/37 (down one tooth on top from stock) and am much happier. I would probably leave it alone if it were you. If you do gear down, you will probably have to add more weight to the primary. May over-rev depending on how you are dialed in now. At least mine did with lower gear.
 
I was a little mixed up!

I had the gears mixed up i thought my 2000 SRX had 22 upper and 37 lower gear and 68 chaim, see i have an older manual for 98-99, thanks for clearing that up Atlas........this is what i might do, a buddy is putting reverse on his Viper(136" conversion), and needs longer chain, so we will trade chains his 68 for my 70 and i will pick up a 22 tooth upper(might PM you Atlas if you still have) and see how that works, i don't mind the loss on top, i am not into lake racing 110 would be fine, i am more of a hard hitting low and mid range kind a guy...........Reaper
