This is a shout out to all of you knowledgeable people that make this site great. As a newbie to sledding, the amount of things to learn if you want to work on your own sled seems daunting. How did you come about your knowledge? Where would a guy like me go if I wanted to gain more know how on these engines?
 
Read read and read! Do you have basic knowledge on 2 cycle theory of combustion? Honestly, you just got to get in there and take stuff apart, break things, fix stuff and just see how it all works and ask questions! I've been doing this from a young age and teach myself... A lot of things from other types of recreational vehicles is transferable to sleds and vise versa.
 
I would say I have very basic knowledge of two stroke engines. I agree, you just have to get in there, yet in the back of my mind, I am always thinking....I hope that was suppose to turn like that...LOL
 
Im pretty damn good at breaking stuff and im too cheap to pay somebody to fix for the most part ahaha. But really i just like looking up archives and reading tutorials and how tos. raised by a mechanic and always had an understanding of engines and stuff.
 
you are at the right spot for gaining knowledge on Yamaha motors. most of us where started my our parents/relatives on how to fix stuff. a lot of it is just the desire to get it running properly or again.

First thing I'd sugegst is get a genuine shop manual for your sled and read it cover to cover... twice.

Second, ask questions.
 
You would be amazed at how fast you can learn when sled breaks down miles from anywhere at night and your alone. Happened to me last year except I wasn't too far but way out in a field. A torque rod bolt backed out into my clutch making it impossible to tow unless I took the clutch off. I keep some pretty good tool assortments with me. Then I heard a coyote in the woods maybe 50 yards from me. Holy cow did I yank that bolt out fast, screwed up the clutch a little but was outta there in 15 minutes! Now I have 3 sleds and nobody to ride with so I don't go too far. GF has back issues, so do I though but not as bad. Just trial and error and the folks at this site.
 
There is no such thing on this site as a stupid tech question......everyone on here has different skill sets and I have ALWAYS found a willingness to educate others on this site.........also YouTube....if something doesnt have a video on there it doest exist lol
 
Thanks for the info guys. Wondering if there are any yamaha sledheads in my neck of the woods that wouldnt mind showing me some tricks. I will supply the beer! I am in Rockwood Ontario (outside Guelph)
 
Welcome to the site. This is without question the best site on the web with the brightest and best looking people on the planet contributing their expertise to improve the quality of life for mankind by keeping Yamaha sleds alive and well. Seriously, everyone on the site is always willing to help each other out. You won't learn if you don't ask!!! We are all here to help. Take time and explore this site, chek out the tech pages for procedures and specs.

HAHAHA!!! ok.......so with the exception of VICTORY2K1.... there is no such thing as a stupid question!!:mrgreen: LOL!! but honestly, if you have the question and cant find the answer through a search of the older threads, then there is a good chance someone else will also have the same question. so don't be afraid to ask!!!
