Ok guys and gals. New to the site. Been reading tons of useful information but first time post.

I picked up a piece of crap 90 phaser 2. The darn thing has the wrong fuel pump on it. I know the yammi part number for the correct one. My question is which mikuni model is it? I have been having nothing but problems with this thing. It runs. Was running good for a few days. Now just runs like crap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help on the Mikuni pump question but as regards the sled running bad, first thing to check is for hanging choke cables.
That was what I found to be causing most of the problems with my 93 Phazer.
 
what makes you think its the fuel pump and not something else????? whats it doing? when you say running crappy that can mean alot of different things going on. i think anyone who reads this is gonna need more info to help you.

So, you bought a 25 year old cobbled up machine that needs maintenance... I'd definitely call the sled crap...

I switched out the fuel pump because the one on it was leaking fuel from a crack.
The sled runs, just not very good. 110 compression both sides. New plugs, fresh gas,
Fresh oil, new fuel lines. Carb boots are new. Replaced plugs in the carbs and put in the
correct holes.

It starts and idles ok. When I push the throttle, it bogs and dies. If I slowly push the throttle,
it will rev up and go, then it takes off. If I keep the rpm up, it runs good. Once I let the rpm get
too low, it wants to stall. Seems like it's getting too much gas?
 
Probably not enough gas.
Make sure everything is clean in the carbs. Any varnish needs to be scraped from the walls of the jets.
There is a very small orifice in one of the holes at the bottom of the mouth of the carb. If that is plugged it will cause a bog.
Beyond that it may need an adjustment. Turn both mixture screws out evenly a little at a time until it does not bog. That will usually leave it too rich at idle, but that is the way Phazer's are.
There could be other causes, but these things will most often cure it.
 
I've cleaned the carbs half dozen times, but I will do it again today. Haven't really messed with the mixture screws, just have them set 1 1/2 turns out. Thanks for the replies

If you got the plug locations from the service manual they're in the wrong position. Here is where they should go, and it will run like crap if they're not right.

Plugs are new and in the correct holes. I backed out the mixture screws some, and it seems to have helped a little, but it's still really slow getting the Rpms up. Until it gets above 4000, then it sounds great and the throttle response is good. Doesn't seem to want to idle anymore either.
 
Mouse nest in the exhaust pipe? Was it barn stored before you got it?
Not unheard of, they like to go in there, had a 440 skidoo, the critters hauled all the sunflower seeds in the county into that pipe that Summer.
They even installed some in my Drz 400 muffler the next winter.

Is it bogging or just slow accelerating? When it is doing that flip the choke up and see what happens.
The idle speed will have to be increased when the mixture is richened.
 
I have the choke cable disconnected because one side is stuck and doesn't allow the plunger to seat all the way. I have the mixture screws out 2 full turns. It doesn't bog to the point of dying, but it's still not right. Almost sounds like when you take off in second gear on a motorcycle. Rpms climb slow, then takes off

Also, I have the TORS bypassed
 
What I did was take the choke plungers and dropped them in the holes, then I took the the springs and adjusters and screwed them in all the way so that the pressure from the springs would hold them down. Before doing this, it was running worse than it is now. I'm pretty sure it was flooding one cylinder really bad as the spark plug on that side was always soaked.
