These cost probably $10 a piece to make(the shells), maybe more depending on the star make-up. I want a comet tail and strobes on these. That means iron powder and not sure about the strobes. I am pretty new at this. You have to make everything from scratch including the black powder. Its my summer hobby.
The huge ones they use in China or Japan can be as big as 48". I think the big ones here are 12-16 inch. City fireworks are smaller yet. Those mortars you can buy at the roadside stands commonly called festival balls are 1.75-1.9 inches. Shipping on the chemicals is crazy, can be up to half of your total price.
