88 Exciter EX570M Windsheild replacement

Hi Everyone

Can some one answer a couple of question about this sled.

I just got this Sled from my brother who only used it as a backup sled.
He bought it about 13 years ago and has always called it old reliable cause she would always run and still does.
He has always had to use starting fluid to get it to start but once it starts it is good.

There are a couple of levers one on each side of the sled about knee height which he has no clue what they are, one has the lever broken off and has 2 cables that runs to the engine just above each carb.
The other runs to the other side of the sled to what looks like gas line.
Could someone explain what these are?

Also how do I get the old low windshield off and replace it? I can see 4 out of the 6 screws but cant see how to get to the other 2 screws.

hey man the 2 cable lever is for the choke,replace it and it will start easier,the other one is the fuel shutoff,we have a exciter facebook page,bunch of good guys willing to help on there,join up!

I was told the lever in the center next to the gas cap was the choke? Is this also a choke?

Dewman, The lever next to the gas cap is the choke. The lever on the left is a fuel shut off. The lever on the right is for the decompression valves that you see above the carbs, used for cold starting. You shouldnt need starting fluid to start your sled. Not only is ether a great solvent that washes all oil off anything it comes in contact with (ie cylinders, pistons etc.) it is also extremely combustible (why it works). The problem with ether is that it can sometimes ignite in the bottom end of a 2 stroke engine and blow out or damage crank seals.
Check the choke cable adjustment. It may be out of adjustment, causing it not to lift the plungers when activated. This could be why you cant start it with out starting fluid.

So windshield replacement hey?? You will have to take the handle bar pad off and the soft foam rubber gauge cluster cover at least from what I can remember. There are two screws behind the gauge cluster that will have to come off. I've done a bunch of windshield changes, but I just kind of "do it" so you may have to take the gauge cluster off too but i can recall for sure.
If this sled sat outside, you can bet that the screws will not come out of the fairing without twisting the the brass threaded inserts out or snapping the plastic with it. No big deal though. You can grind the nubs off the rear of the fairing and drill some holes where the existing screws were. I then use stainless pan head allen socket type screws for a nice finished look. This post of mine might not make much sense to you untill you start tearing into it.

Along with what throttle junkie said. I am able to use a long philips screwdriver to get out the two screws behind the gauge cluster but there are also 2 screws on the underside of the face mask. With these 4 screws out, the fsce will come right off. The windsheild itself is explanitory at thag point.
