so i been out riding the exciter quite a bit and mostly except it for what it is but can't get over the piss poor fuel mileage. prior to the season i replaced every bearing in the suspension. new slides, shafts. belt, complete primary cleaning, shimming, replaced secondary with exciter II which has been gone thru, carbs completely rebuilt and properly jetted, nice tan color, it runs fantastic but super crappy mileage. it has the twin psi pipes on it and there too loud for me and will remove next season but starting to wonder if there helping kill the mpg. i dare not lean it anymore then it is now not needing a melt down. im fairly easy with the thumb and 99% riding fairly tight twisty turn trails. is it just the nature of the beast? forgot to note mpg's are maybe 6-7

Hey pete, I usually start looking for a gas station at around 60 miles or so. It seems with almost any tune I get around 8-10 mpg

even 8-10 seems pretty piggy to me! i know i've thrown alot of money in the tank lately and really has me thinking about just parting the whole thing out at the end of this season. for all the stuff i've done and all the retro fitting it would need im better off changing sleds and calling it a day.

Unfortunately, unless you spend a bunch of cash and get something much newer, or down size to a 340-440 fan cooled sled, you are going to have to deal with about 10mpg fuel consumption.

even my 94 vmax 600 did around 12-13 i could live with that. i think a 500 would be a good all around size for me and still get good mileage. im gonna start looking around for sure and will def be doing a full part out of the 87. its ran its course! i talked to a couple guys on the trail this morning both riding ski doo's 600 2010 that were 2 stroke getting 20mpg. i can't spend that kind of $ but know i can do something better then the 570

Id say your Vmax was well tuned. Thats the best I have ever heard of for a vmax. Throw a stock pipe on your exciter like you were talking about doing and you will end up with a little better milage. You exciter looks like a clean sled, personally, I would keep it or sell it whole. There are a ton of guys selling exciter parts. Some parts will sell fast, then you will be sitting on 95% of the sled for a very, very long time. With that said, the time/profit margin is almost non existant. This goes with pretty much any sled now a days. I guess it depends on how long you want to trip over the stuff. This is comming from a guy who have been building/ and parting exciters for about 10 years. LOL. Id say 2009 was the peak for the Exciter stuff. I have seen a steady decline ever since.

You may be giving up some milage in your clutching too. Are you sure you have it dialed in yet??

im pretty sure i have everything dialed in throttlejunkie. i was so excited in the beginning with this thing but just because of all the work i did and just getting back to sledding i just failed to see the light with these sleds. in my opinion and this is just mine it has too many issues that need to be addressed to being anything i would ride next season. as a matter of fact i have it listed now on my local craigs, im pretty sure your right about selling it too. im in for a bath with it im afraid. no one wants to ride these things other then the die hards. between the poor mileage, poor steering, poor suspension the rest of the sled is ok.for all it would take to address all these conditions I'd be better off taking the bath and chalk it up to a good life lesson. i have to pay for this education. i have lots of time between now and fall and now the market is flooded with sellers so who knows what i will be riding. i like the Yamaha's but just never know. theirs alot of nice stuff out there

I'd like to see that 20mpg calculation, my srx runs on sunshine and farts compared to my buddy's rev 600 ho, now I know you guys are gonna call bullshit but his is a 600 twin single pipe and is an 04, I ride the legendary screaming lake dwelling snow plow that is the 01 srx 700, I've got 100ccs on him aswell as a cylinder 2 pipes and a carb, I also have more then 20 hp on him and I don't fill up more then he does and I use less oil then he does, no offence to owners but I'm very unimpressed with those newer carbed twins or at least the skidoos. That's been my experience with those anyway

yes the 20mpg makes me skeptical too but people say lots of stuff. his buddy was the one that pointed it out tho so who knows. despite how bad my fuel mileage is its also compounded by fuel price. having to pay 3.09 for 93 octane just makes it insult to injury in my book. then having to correlate fuel pit stops every 50 miles to fill up a tiny fuel cell is just icing on the cake!! this thing is in need of a family that wants to buzz around there property or play on a lake where you can ride in a straight line so no hard steering or bumps for the suspension and can have 4 five gallon gas cans for a few hours of play. best part of my machine is how well it runs, can't take that away from it but im looking for more

I have a couple of 1993 Exciter SX 570, one running and one being restored.
I just got these recently, I have a 93 Phazer as my daily runner as well.
I have only ran the exciter on a few short runs and did not test the MPG, I have to add steering bushings and it needs clutch work.
They are not known as the most economical of sleds but my guess to get reasonable miles on a run the secret would be in the gearing and clutching.
Long tracking it might also help, current runner has a 121 x 1-1/2 lug track and it still spins that track with ease at all speeds, thing is a hoot.
The means to carry a few litres extra gas would not hurt either as the tank is only 8.2 gallon.

im not sure what the deal is really trailman. its really too bad tho. its in fairly nice condition and there good looking sleds. one minute i want to build it out to a nice long track with a great suspension and bigger track and even had thoughts of doing a trailing arm conversion in the front then my mind goes the other way and start thinkin just sell it and buy something newer. if i had lots of extra money i would buy newer but don't. then again if i sell it i won't get next to anything for it so im in between a rock and hard place. if i keep it i can pick up used parts as money allows and could have fun at the same time and who knows if i did do some gearing changes i could see an improvement with mpg's. i been wondering too if the ethanol in the fuel kills the mileage

Need to find some one else with same model and go for a full tank ride together (next year now) and see how they compare . That way you will
both be driving with the same aggression level ... also sounds like these could be spinning miles which means you are getting really poor mileage .
Too aggressive runner ? need more pressure down on front of track ?, plastic ski skins ?... BIG block between bar and throttle /...LOL.
It sounds like the sled likes being ridden aggressively ... My old 74 TL433F Yam used about 1 gallon / hour.. so you needed to be home in
just over 3 hours as it held 4 US gallon.

i switch back and forth between my psi duals and psi single pipe a few times a year because the twins are gas hogs, find a good single pipe and it will run just as good and still be driveable

well, got a bit on craigslist today and the exciter is now in other hands.im a bit sad but relieved at the same time. the market is flooded around here with lots of what i think would be better sleds but priced it to sell rather then sit on it till next season. i made out ok but put alot of time and work into it just to own for such a short time. i go a bit overboard to make things nice and safe and reliable but thats ok. hopefully the next owner will benefit and appreciate it. not sure what i will wind up with before next fall. i'll def be riding some kind of yamaha. i've seen many good deals on 2000 and up srx's. im always watching the ads. i will have to see what all else pops up.

I guess sometimes you need to move on. Im glad to see you found someone who will appreciate your Exciter as much as you did. The SRX is a nice sled, but you still wont be impressing any tree huggers with the MPG. They do have a bigger tank by at least double compared to your old Exciter so your range between fill ups will definitely increase.

I still had my 88 Exciter (8.3 gal tank) in which my dad or brother rode when I bought a 94 and then a 96XT 600's with a ten gal. tank the Vmax's were the sled that needed to find a gas pump.
