87 exciter belt options/opinions

i need to buy a new belt for my hopped up 87 exciter. there are many choices on eBay where i will buy but what should i buy? not looking to break the bank so under 50 bucks is my limit to spend. whats everyone's thoughts? needs to be a 1 1/4 belt too
 
I hope it works out for you. I have not had any aftermarket belt work properly due to the ridiculous tolerances that the aftermarket companies have on their belts. Some are to wide, too short or too long. You can set up your clutches for any belt, but you are at square one again when you have to replace it. For the 108, you would run an 89L-17641-01-00. $45 from my local dealer. You may have saved 3 bux but now you have a gamble and a headache next time you change a belt. What did you actually save??
 
im already set up for 1 1/4 wide belt and i believe the part # you posted is for later year exciter so i just let sleeping dogs lay. im pretty sure other company's know how to build belts too.its not like Yamaha makes their own belts. thanks tho
 
A 108 primary will not work with a 89x-17641-01-00 (87-90) Exciter. It is not wide enough and will not shift completely. You need to run the wider belt. Yamaha does have other companies make their belts to Yamaha's tolerances. The tolerances on the aftermarket belts are all over the place. You might get lucky, or maybe not. Im not trying to be a jerk, but this is a fact when it comes to these belts.
If this 108 is an add on by yourself, you will have to shim the secondary, run a white spring and at least a 50* prewind. Also a probably not much over a 39* helix or you will over shift. A newer (91-94) Exciter/Vmax secondary makes a world of difference when running an overdrive clutch. Take it for what its worth. I hope your set up comes out ok.

im listening. heres the thing tho.i bought this sled with everything intact im not saying its correct but i believe no short cuts were made. right now i have 2 belts it came with which are gates 25x4320 and the sled is perfect for me and seems to shift and engage correct. clutch comes in at 4100-4200 and tops out around 7200-7400. are you saying its not possible the primary was not set up for this belt and only a 1 3/8 belt will work? I've seen instructions on how to shim the 108 for different width belts. ps i know you mean no harm and just trying to help and much appreciated.
 
As far as I know, the sheave angles on the 108 doesnt allow a full shift if using a 1-1/4'' belt. I would pop the cover plate off, remove the spring, then slide the movable sheave tight against the stationary sheave. Now throw your existing belt on it and see how far down the belt sits while holding the clutch sheaves together. Chances are the 1-1/4" belt wont come all the way to the top. Do you happen to have a black streak on the clutch sheaves near the top???
Your engagement sounds perfect, but your peak RPM is too low. I believe you have PSI twins on your sled?? In that case you should shoot for 77-7800 peak if you have the pipes that have the rings on the pipes that seal the flanges. They had other pipes that ran a little lower, in the 7500 rpm range that do not have the rings on the pipes.

yes twin psi pipes with slip in flange mounts. just for ha ha's i marked the primary up with a sharpie and im 3/8 of an inch from the belt coming to the top of the primary sheaves. that said my belt is pretty worn hence needing a new belt. new belt will be in the mail so hopefully it won't be too far out of spec. maybe at some point i will buy the 88r secondary but mine seems to be working ok for now with a black spring in it
 
Hmmm, I dont know why anyone one would go through the trouble of shimming the primary when all it would take is a shim in the secondary to run a 1-3/8 belt. If you are in fact running the belt all the way to the top of the primary, I would guess that the sheaves are machined to achieve full shift??

Length was perfect and was just a touch over 1/1/4 wide.
I have just a touch of clearance on the primary so I guess it's ok.

The belt to sheave distance with a new belt should be 0,020"
No more and no less.

either clutch can be shimmed. every belt is also a little diffrent in lenth and width thats why its always recommended to check the fit of each belt. not sure why you would think the sheaves would have been machined???????? you've lost me in what you are saying!!!!!!! there is nothing special going on here!! why do you think they make and sell clutch and primary shims? so you can adjust per belt width & length. ps not trying to be harsh throttlejunkie35 all said with respect.
