New to me toy.


Set that sleed up ase a 700 setting,,,,,,, SX springs,.weight, and more,,,,,,,,,,,, will runn 500 lower rpm with gain in speed,,,,,,,,,,,,,that engin is strong and can pull it...............
 
Sled is back in the garage again and stored. Final mileage for the season is 2220km. So I accumulated another 240km of riding since the last heavy snow fall (8th of April) . But all good things must come to an end. Happy I had the opportunity to enjoy her so much.

Don't know about you guys. But as much as I am a summer person and my sled sits dormant, I'm already dreaming about next season! Just can't stop thinking about it.

Started up the old Venture 700 this afternoon. I let warm up and then ran it from 40 to 60 km/h for a few minutes. Back end was supported by a 36", 6 ton safely jack. Sounds and runs fantastic! Almost perfect. Won't need too much work to get it ready for the this coming season as all the big ticket items were done last year. This year clutches get a complete rebuild for sure. New heated handles, probably a rear shock or two and new sliders. Rear skid will be removal and inspection for that stuff. Also inspect chain case, maybe change the chain and idler bearing. Then fill with fresh synthetic fluid. That's all I can think of for now anyways.

In the next few days I'll be removing the skid and clutchs from my sled.
To date my list of things to do before this season are....

-Rebuild both clutches with all new bushings and guts. Not sure if I'm replacing springs yet as they seemed to worked well last year.
- New heated grips and thumb warmers. Royal D has a nice complet kit for 100$
-Rip out skid and inspect. So grease everything, maybe new shocks, shim loose bushings, new sliders, check boogy wheel and bearings etc....
-Fresh synthetic chain case oil after full inspection of all drive line bearings, gears, chain, etc..
- Inspect wiring harness for damage.
-Inspect and lube front suspension

That's all I can think of for now. I'm sure more things will be added to the list soon.

Latest compression test using pull cord was 120 psi across all three cylinders.

Started doing some simplistic cheap mods to my 700 redhead. First one, I removed the middle gasket from my headgaskets. Got everything back together, started second pull. Once warmed up I did a few 60km / h runs for a few minutes. Checked the rads, all got warm. Good to go! I gained 5 psi on each cylinder with this mod. So 125 psi across the board.

Next will be reed stopper notches.

Decided to get the reed stopper notches started. So I ripped out the air box, carbs, boots etc....
Removed the stoppers and grinded them with my fine bench grinding wheel. Finished them with 320 grit sand paper. Blue locktight on every screw

Today I removed both clutchs, starter and rear skid. What a Pain removing the skid was!

My previously welded W arm has no cracks! Surprised all my welds held up! Overall it needs a bit of shiming and greasing of various bushings. Maybe a shock. Clutchs will be rebuilt.

My Cobra track is still in perfect condition after 2200 kms of hard use. So that's great.

BTDT :) It took me 6 hours to reinstall my skid. I recommend getting a helper. There are some pictures in one of the tech links in this forum that are helpful, but IIRC, removing the rear shock or loosening the limit straps on the front helps.
 
I forgot to mention, I installed different rear shocks on my Venture. I forget which Yamaha model they came from, but I had them refreshed/revalved before I installed. I probably have $150 in the shocks and service work.

Since I'm so new to sledding, I don't know if they are an improvement. With my lack of snow last winter, I spent more time wrenching/accessorizing my sled.
 
Pretty sure the old oil shocks weren't working anymore. So if you intalled gas shocks they are an improvement.

Any direct bolt in replacement for gas shocks? Part numbers? I can find a rear gas shock replacement threw Royale Distributing ( 110$ for a Kimpex ) but I'm not having any luck with the front shock.

Removed both spring / shock assemblies from the skid.
Removed both springs ( without the proper spring compressor).

Front shock is almost finished so I definitely will be replacing it was I find a source. The rear shock still dampens really well, but does not extend by itself. The shock remains in the compressed position without spring tension.So assume it's not functioning as it should? Not familiar enough with these to know better yet.

I looked through my PM and it appears that I installed rear shocks from a 200? Viper. Per other threads in this forum, I used the Viper front shock springs, and the spring from my Venture on the rear. The spring ID was a little different, so I made a spring keeper out of an old washer.
 
Throw the old oil shocks in the recycle bin, they are no good by now. I wouldn't waste my time on them. The center shock from any KYB gas shock equipped pro action sled will fit if I am not terribly mistaken. Shouldn't be hard to find, and those are rebuildable. However, the center shock is the most important I.M.O. Get a used shock from another yamaha as well, and rebuild it.

Called around, a used original forward shock is 100$
I'm considering the viper or srx shock for that price.
Are we sure they are interchangeable on a Venture skid? Thanks
