I won a $1000.00 bet, politicians just gotta blame everything on Canada. I knew that President Shrub would find some way to knock our dollar down more. Are any of you suprised? Can anyone prove that the latest mad cow, originated in Canada, or became infected for sure, while in Canada? From my understanding, they are not born with it, they are infected with it. What are the chances that it became infected in the USA? Is it like CWD in deer? A good buddy of mine, after eating deer at my table, told me that he was informed earlier, that50% of all the Deer shot in Alberta had CWD, the information came directly from game wardens from Vermilion. I looked into it, and dont think they even found a single case of it here. Anyone know any different?

i think you should look at yourself the last outbreak beef in canada was shut down do to a beast that originated form the USA . So take your 1000 dollars go to your grocier and buy some beef

The cow that had the disease was from Alberta Canada and was imported to the US in August 2001.Back in May 2003 a sick cow was discovered in Alberta also.So both sick cows were from Canada.

For those of you who don't know, it was a holstien milk cow. All holstien milk cows are traced very closely, for breeding purpose, ie if you get one giving 10lbs of milk a day, you don't want another from the same breed lines. Also when you sell these cows across country lines there is a lot, and I mean alot of testing that goes on. The export country does the most of the testing, cows are tested for everything from tb to psudorabies, to mouth and hoof disease, and yes mad cow. When they get to the country of delivery, they are mainly retested for some of the minor infectious diseases, and beings this was only Canada to the US about the only test the US official would do would be a temp test to check for fever, since they can watch the cow come out of the Canadian inspection site, and walk to the US site. These cows are also quarennteened for 30 days to 90 days from all others herd animals, to prevent an outbreak of any kind. I am gueesing that this was just either one that got through the system, or that it somehow contracted the disease in another way. The one item the do not test yet, and I have thought for years needs to be, is semen. You can ship semen around the globe and back and it will not be tested for anything. So whos to say if this cow came from canada, was breed in the US by semen from Italy, that the disease didn't come from Italy into a Canadian cow residing in the US. As far as the President of the US having anything to do with it being found out that it was a cow from Canada is rediculous. There are sale barns in the midwest cancelling sales, because pakers aren't buying beef, because exports where cut 90%. This is crippling the American and Canadian cattle market. It will bury many a family farm along the way. I'd say time spent finding out why it happened, and a way to fix it are time better spent than blaming George Bush for the problem. Fact is the cow came from Canada, and was found in the States with the disease. Know as far as I am concerned we need to fix the problem before any more of our friends and families go broke because of it, no matter if you are north or south of the line. Maxdlx

Max- good post. This was intended to be a joke. I wasnt serious about the Pres. The only thing that gets me, is I watch news from both sides of the border, and you would not believe the propaganda. I know Bush doesnt control the press, I know its not his fault, it was my poor attempt at levity. It is not a joke that farmers and companies are going broke at all, our best friends and all my neighbors are farmers. What exactly do you think you can do to fix this?

It strikes again. I grew up and currently live on a farm, and yes, we are a cattle producer. Last May, borders were shut down for much of Canada's beef export. Myslef, much like other canadian beef producers were hit hard with this. We ended up keeping much of our cattle because there was no sale for them, this left us in a hard place, we didn't have enough feed to last years and this years stock, but our biggest problem was lack of storage for the animals. It was a tough year in general for farming this summer, and we have recently just started to get things into motion again with the sale of some of our cattle just weeks ago. When I heard that Canada was being blamed for it I was disgusted. The case in Canada was believed to be only one case, which was more than likely contracted through feed. It can be contracted through animal bi-products that are not prohibited to be fed to animals yet some try it. My thought are that this case is probably the same thing, more than likely just a single case contracted through the feed. Any animal that I have seen sent through the border have gone through rigorous testing, and I sincerly doubt that this would have been missed especially since the cow would have went through the border not long after they were reopened. Of course I am not an expert and this is just my .02 cents. I just hope the issue can be resolved soon, and hope that ALL farmers can get trhough this, it could be another rough year. Remember us farmers, without us there would be no food!!!!, haha it feels good to vent, lol

OK, HERES ANOTHER CAN OF WORMS.
I have a good buddy that is a farmer. He has oil wells on his land. They dont pay Alberta health care, because they dont make enough money, and get subsidised. He makes 90,000 a year just off oil residuals. He makes 250,000+ off grain. He gets all money back for diesel to heat his place. He paid 11,000 in income tax last year, and CRIED about it. He bitches about the CROW being removed, because it was free money. He works 6 weeks a year. He gets to claim everything, all power, fuel, gas, vehicle maintenance, and still wants more free. He is not a cattle farmer anymore, but was in it for many years. He gets to buy sleds and quads every year, and write them off. He gets to pay 30,000 a year to his wife as a tax write off, and 20,000 a year into RRSP that is tax deductable. If geese eat his barley, he gets 10,000-15000 in damages, free. He sold his round bales, all 1000+ of them for 7.00 each, cash, and the other guy used his own equipment to bale them. Ask me if I feel sorry at all for Alberta Grain and Cattle Farmers. I have yet to meet a farmer that is ANYWHERE in the rough shape they claim to be, check out the house, the toys, the equipment, the rock on the wifes hand, then tell me that they need 485,000,000 in crop and cattle subsidies because last year was rough. Cry me a ****ing river.
 
Stop crying and keep eating beef so I can keep paying for my sled ok guys? This is one isolated case and the USDA has excellent measures in palce to keep this from becoming an outbreak like the UK has had. If you don't like to eat the brain or spinal cord tissue then you will be ok cause these are the only tissues that have the prion(protien) in them.

They need to start talking to educated farmers. None of them that I have seen interviewed no diddly about the diseas. I would start letting people know that a human has to eat the brains, and some of the internal organs to contract mad cow disease from processed beef. YOU CAN NOT GET IT FROM EATING STEAK OR HAMBURGER. Instead they are all just winning that it will break them. We used to have 2500 heads of feeder cattle on handat all times, and if it where me I'd be trying to educate the public, not cry to them. If the price of feeders drops much more, I might be back in the cattle business for a few weeks, be an easy 50 bucks a cwt. So even though you may not all be farmers, help them out by spreading the word. YOU CAN NOT GET IT FROM EATING STEAK OR HAMBURGER. Maxdlx

only trouble is, half of the hype about the Mad cow problem, according to statasticians and political scientists, is it is actually repercussions aimed at Canada for not helping in the last war. Whether or not anyone agrees, I believe it to be at least partially true. Ya, ok there was a case of mad cow, but should the borders be locked for as long as they were? You guys should try coming from Canada to the USA even for the weekend, they treat us like we are carrying bombs in our wallets. To sum it up, politicians make the rules, peons carry them out, we suffer.
 
We went to Ontario twice last year. It made me uneasy how easy it was to get into Canada. on our first trip, which was at night, the guard was on the phone, and just waved us through, we didn't even stop. 2nd trip was similar, but a where ya from/do you have any candybars kinda thing, total of 10 seconds.

Coming back into the states, whole nother ball game. You'd better have your shit in order and look sober, and be ready to open up the trailer too.

I came away with a sense that the security on the north side of the border is like a seive, anyone who wants to can come and go.

Would the Bush administration punish canadian farmers for something your gubment did? Ridiculous.
