Working on a 99 Vmax 500 that I picked up and was wondering what recommendation people would have in regards to clutching. Machine is totally stock and just looking for maybe a little more aggressive trail setup. I really don't want to spend a ton of money on it if possible. What recommendations do you have?

Much better shift out with helix change, lost top end at *60, gained it back and more at *80, and back shift is pretty darn good. Belt wear is excellent. Trail - Aggressive vmaxjohn vmaxjohn@chartermi.net
this is the set-up i used on my 01 sx500r. the only change i made was i used thundershift 40g base weights loaded the same as he did as they are bolts so it is easyer to add weight if i needed to. if you have the 8ab weights in your sled, just follow the rivit settings and helix. made the sled an awsome corner to corner one.

Forgive me but what should I look at changing? Springs, weights, Helix? And if so to what and what brand?

4. Three engagement shims. Or a slice of schedule 40 that's @ .125 thick.

Yes I suggest these used Yamaha parts as they'd be cheaper than some new aftermarket thrown in a box and tested very little. Plus .... it is what I know. And to top it off, you can tell anyone that it is all stock. (Stock from what is a whole nuther story.)
The 8BVFA helix is the only identifier that I know on it. I cannot remember what sled they were on. An RX-1 mabey?????

Try to stay w/i 1* of the 48/42 helix that Maim stated.
As far as the 8ab clutch weights .... the 8ca weights are the same profile and work well too. They are just a bit heavier. The rivets would be .8 in both holes w/ these 8ca weights on a 500 twin.

the helix i listed is a dalton helix witch is still availible new.
I don't understand this, I am 10 kph faster running at 8000 with my VT 500, than on 7600. On all dyno tests I've seen, it seems that it makes the most hp between 7750 and 8050

I believe you have it. But just to be clear .....
Either three 8ABs w/ the six 2.4g rivets.
OR
Three 8CAs w/ the six .8g rivets.
Everything else looks good. I do not believe you'll find the shims as they are discontinued.

So I just found a used Helix that the seller shows a part number of 8FA-17604-00-00 on it. Looks like the helix is stamped 8BV31. Is this correct?

No. That is a 43*. The first letter after the V is the indicator. An 8BV71 is a 47*. An 8BV10 indicates a 41*. An 8BV51 is a 45*.

So I had a chance to take the sled out for a ride yesterday with all the new clutching upgrade and I have to say it ran great. Thanks for all the help. The one thing that was not so good was the belt. Carlisle Ultimax belts. MAX1118M3. I put 40 miles on this belt and every time I stopped the belt would squeal like crazy, I switched back over to my Yamaha belt and not squealing for the rest of the day.

You need to adjust your secondary to compensate for the wider belt.... Been discussed on here hundreds of times

Take the belt off and scrub the sides. It still has precure on it from when it was cured. Also ... see below.

Did you take those shims out and put the Ultimax back on. I bet a dime to a dollar that the Ultimax rode higher up in the secondary.
