Hey TY! I need help/tuning suggestions for my vintage snox sled. I built a 1985 XLV 540 fan specifically to run leaf spring vintage classes in WI. Nutterville BeaterCross, Arpin, Ditch Banger, etc type events.
Current setup: bone stock engine, oil inj deleted, boyesen reeds, 40mm Mikuni round slide carb jetted 420m/45p, AA5 tube, 7dh2 needle, 2.5 slide, wahl bros throttle block, rsi bar setup, psi SRV pipe, stock gearing and clutching… tallest lug height you can run is 1.25.
What gearing and clutching would be best to run in events like these? Ditch the stock primary for a comet or P-85? Weights? Springs?
Improvements I know I need are higher engagement and snappier response clutching wise, somehow plastic skis on the leafs, hydro brake setup, newer ripsaw 1.25” SR-V seat… Anyone else with more experience on setup would be super appreciated! Thanks.

All I got is that I would say go with the lowest gearing you can fit in there. I believe those things come geared to do around 80MPH. You will never need anything close to that kind of top end. If you do lower the gearing you will almost for sure need more primary weight. Not sure what clutch that year has on it. If it has the YP clutch the 570 Exciter 87M & 82M weight work better than the 8VO weights I suspect would be in a YP of that age. They are also heavier. Make sure the shift RPM is right. I know more about the old Phazers than SRV/XLVs. Good Luck
