My take is at least half of the staff should have been fired going back about twenty years ago. Somewhere along the line the top brass at Yamaha lost their passion, and /or some of the employees.
Unlike the staff from their boat or motocross division, which is thriving because they keep innovating and driving forward.
 
Listen to a snowmobile podcast last year talking to Greg Maier(former top brass for snowmobiles at yamaha USA)..He basic said the final round of EPA emission standards(very strict)never were put into effect:dunno:.This pretty much killed yamahas four-stroke only plan:4STroke: of owning a profitable chunk of the snowmobile market(Needed two-strokes to be non existent/tiny percentage like the ATV and PWC world).Were lucky it lasted until this year because in 2004 they were ready to pull the plug:ORC..As far as marketing the Doo crew are kings of spin,pretty hard to out Doo them:o|.

It was risky to gamble on that.
However, I don't think it was the four stroke engines that sunk them, but having some two strokes wouldn't have hurt given sledders loyalty towards them(I don't know why).
I think it was the chassis really. It was heavy, with poor performing suspension and handling compared to everyone else. In addtion, they never offered an all-Japanese rider forward sled. The FX Nytro was the closest thing, but I called it half-way forward.

One chassis that did it all should of been the goal but they had the Delta box,Phazer,Fx Nytro which were each very different from the other.Arctic Cat also went down the same trail (500 Sno Pro,F-Cat/Crossfire,TwinSpar).
