I had my completely torn ACL replaced 16 Nov with an allograft achiles heel from a cadaver. I rode all season with an off the shelf Donjoy knee brace. Tomorrow will be 4 months post op and I don't need any brace at all now. Since next season you'll be ~8 months post op you may not need a brace at all (except maybe mentally). If your rehab goes about average you'll probably be much more likely to damage your other knee (unless its been repaired before). Good luck with your surgery.
Thanks a lot for the words of encouragement I was thinking about getting a graft from a cadaver but the doctor recommended that i didn't because of my age, and the heavy use my knees get, so the added risk of infection isn't worth it. He said that if he were giving the surgery to one of his kids, there would be no question that he would use their own tendon instead of a cadaver, mainly because of the chances of infection and a mini-rejection. Usually i'm a fast healer so hopefully the rehab will go very well and i can cut a lot off of that 8 months, but either way it will be a long, painful process. I haven't heard good things about it Good to talk to another person who has had the same operation. Thanks again -Michael

Even though I've slowed down in my old age, after reading these post I'm going to finally get one. I've tossed it around for a couple of years and never pulled the trigger. Eric, you're right, it's the other guy that I'm more worried about. Thanks for helping me make my decision.

Yes, I do have a group buy going on tekvests again. Please email for info for the prices are too low to post on this public forum. Let me know if you have questions with sizing as well.
Thanks

No prob Micheal,
My rehab has been real good, not easy but not bad at all. Not a lot of pain but I'm funny that way, I bet you'll be lifting the skis on grass long before 8 months. Funny my doctor recommended the cadaver graft due to quicker healing and job reasons. Last piece of advice re:ACL try to find a rehab place you like before surgery, preferably on that has good exercise equipment and that will let you stay working out until you're done instead of teaching you an exercise and sending you home to do it. Oh yeah and one that has good looking PTs or techs.
Since I had a recent close call what model Tek-Vest is everyone recommending?

Bob, the neck is just a fleece collar, you can zip it off if you want. It's nice to have though when it's really cold out.

i went with the trail pro series, was looking for full front and rear solid panels without zipper for more protection. i am about 190 lbs, 6' even, i wear a medium and it fits great with room to spare, they run big so if you are borderline order the smaller of the two sizes. ski

The only one I'm aware of is the Saf Jac. Cost is maybe a little less, if at all, but the quality doesn't seem to match. The Tek Vest is currently the "shiznit". It's really a nice unit for the price.
If you want something cheap use a Stearns boating lifevest or something like that. Probably be warm as heck and doesn't have the UHMV panels but you could glue some on it I suppose. It would also be a lot bulkier then a Tek Vest. If you have never seen a Tek Vest you really should check one out. Very high quality piece of equipment.

I´ve used this winter a Scott chestprotection. It is not that good what the TekVest is, but I won`t be riding without one anymore. I also use the Scott Powerbelt for my lower back (yep, the suspension on my V4.. )

I can vouch for TekVest. Got the Super Sport model this year. Used it every time I got on the sled. Luckily I haven't had the chance to test its protective qualities. But it's super comfortable. It can also get really warm if the temps run above 25 or so, so I found that I had to adjust my usual clothing requirements.
Nevertheless, it's a smart move. Similar to what someone else said, it's amazing that someone will pay $150 for their feet but skimp on the stuff that could keep you out of the hospital.
My advice is to see if you can try one on before you buy. They run a little big, based on their sizing charts. Plus, you should try one while you're wearing your usual sled gear and jacket.
For the record, I'm 6'2", about 190 with no gut. I bought the large, and it fits, but I have to pull the side straps all the way in as far as they'll go, even with my bibs on. I could've gotten a medium.

Yup & it looks like it works well, I like my TekVest Trail-Pro but cant wear the neck warmer. The biggest reason for buying it was I talked to one of Bills buddys on the search & rescue team. He said showing up to a accident & trying to perform cpr on someone with busted ribs makes the most disturbing sounds & he believes many riders would not die out in the woods. I have a family to think about now & have had so many close calls with trail drunks & wannabee trail racers I was ready to give up riding & riding offtrail once I got ptched off my sled & landed on my back 6" from the top of a stump just sticking out of the snow.
Life is short so play hard but be safe so you can be the best father you can be!

I roll with a FLY chest protector for sport quading in the summer and sledding in the winter. A buddy of mine is sponsored by a company called 661 that makes pressure suits and other protective gear and the stuff is awesome.
Getting a pressure suit for next season.
