'99 SX 700, stock engine, I am getting 14-15 mpg, although the style of riding can change this quite abit, but consistently 14-15, trail riding. It's a nice change after riding cats for years and their 6-7 mpg I was getting with my zr 580
you need to finish your sled with reed notch, and head gasket mod and finally the clutch kit , thats were the mileage comes from....my sx never worse then 12 but have seen 17 on it. Thats was a 97 sx700.
Mr. sled
didnt the 97 sx have a overdrive clutch on it, do you think that has any bearing on milage for the 97

I get 7 to 8 out of mine with a tempa flow. Might have something to do with ridding style. maxdlx

no overdrive clutch, that was never sent out in production....riding style , I would get 12 no matter how it was pounded....

Ihave a 00 sxr600 slp pipes 142.5 jets 45 pilot jets stock gears 50-44 helix .I average 12-14 mpg .Doesnt change much if ran hard .
I modified mine on a step by step using the tech. page. By far the biggest increase in mileage came from Turk's clutch set up. I still don't have the clutching nailed down but I am hoping for more gains. Increased mileage by at least 30% with significant performance gains. I am sorry I can't give numbers but I don't usually track that sort of thing. It's just an observation at the pump. A double bonus of Turk's clutching is a very cool set of sheaves. I pounded that machine for 3 hours straight, up and down the rpm's, breaking trail and being nasty. Barely even warmed the clutches. Used both an 8dn and Dayco Ultimax 2 belt with very little difference in rpm's and temps.
1 layer removed from head gasket
2 1/8 hole in can
jetted 1 down on mains, needles down 1/2
Turk's clutch set up
21/39 gears
Carb heaters on
track at 1" drop for 16 pounds
Driver- 200lbs
Air Temps--9 Celsius
deep and light snow

I have Heelclicker clutch with Tempaflow and Reed spacers. 10.5mpg pushing powder and 14.5 most all the time otherwise as high as 16.5.
Mr. Sled you said you thought the head gasket mod helped-I have not heard this before. Has anyone else noticed this?

Hey Maxdlx, you should be getting way better than that no matter how you are riding it. Unless of course you are always riding in deep powder, and/or hill-climbing.

98 700 sx with stock motor and clutching. Mains down 1 size and needles down 1/2 clip. Consistently 14 - 16 mpg with 5300 miles on her. How do you like the long travel kit? I've got a set of Viper shocks I'm thinking of revalving then add the wide radius rods.

97 700 SX, jetted down, layer removed, bored can. I ran with a stock 00 700 SXr and a 440 Pol XC all day and would constantly piss them off at the pump. They would always use 3 - 5 gallons more than me every day for the complete trip. I was around 15 mpg. The pol 440 was a thirsty little bugger but he was running 9 grand all day trying to reach out and run with the triples. We had a 800 ZRT that was getting 6 and he was not happy. That thing drank oil and gas like it was free. Heavy turd too.
