Can anyone tell me where I can find Factory horsepower ratings for 1997 Yamaha snowmobiles? In particular I am looking for 1997 Vmax 500XT, but I would like to compare it to other models as well. Thanks alot.
the '01 500 isn't any more power, they are around 82 horse. The 600 twin is around 93 horse. Definately not the strongest 5 and 600's out there, but rock solid
500 motor is around 86-88 hp. The 600 twin or triple sx motors are around 96-98 hp on average. The 500 twin if you're looking to get some more HP out of it buy a set of 600 twin carbs, wire harness, and cdi. Adding those parts will give you the advanced timing like the 600 had and put you up around 92-94 hp. The 600 twin can also be massaged to up around 105-107 hp with the right parts.
carb specs on the 500 are identical to the 600 except for fuel screw adjustment. Can the timing not be changed without changing the cdi? How about an aftermarket set of reeds? What whould they do to power band and response? Is the same gain available by doing the mod to the factory reeds?
The 600 carbs have the throttle position sensor in them where as the 500 does not. Otherwise everything is the same. In order to adapt if to the 500 you need to swap out the carbs, wiring harness, and cdi. This will give you advanced timing for 8 seconds when you have the throttle wide open. Reeds won't gain any hp, but might make it slightly snappier.
They had a sheet on there from a '96 500 and it made almost 82, which is right around what i thought. It was even a little leaner on the main (147.5 as opposed to 150)
Slight hp differences from the 96 pogo-stick model to the 98 (first year the 500 was in the pro-action chassis) due to some slight improvements in the motor and ignition timing. The SX, Vmax XT, and Vmax XTC, were all around 88 hp in 98-99.
