2002 Viper ER, How long does the motor last??

That's a loaded question I know. We are talking about a 2002 Viper ER. It's got 7500 miles. Let's also assume the sled does not appear to have been abused and was riden by a light (120 pound) person since it was new. The sled has 144 picks, an additional heat exchanger in the back, and the Yamaha shock upgrade. Playing the averages here how much life would you expect this motor have left? I can do a compression check. What's a good compression number?

I'm in the used sled market right now so I'm wondering if this sled is worth considering. Seems like all the sleds I see for sale have 2000-5000 miles. Why is that? Is a 10000 mile sled all done?
 
I had almost 10,000 miles on my 98 srx when I sold it. As long as you take care of these things, they will be good to you. It's a Yammie!!! Nuff said.
 
Yeah a compression check is in order i just did mine and one of them is so posed to be a little less than the others i forgot the actul numbers i think it wasd around 30 you ahould ask yamahollic22 he probably knows. I think the one that is soposed to be a little lower on pressuer is the 3rd one th the left if you are sitting on the sled. ;)!
 
yea the PTO cylinder will be about 20-25 lbs. less than the other two. Post us your numbers when you check it.
 
I have over 8,000 on my 02 viper and she runs like a top. Sold to my dad so I can upgrade to a Attak. FYI the 02 Vipers I have heard had two different compression rates. Right form the factory... Mine was on the low side compared to some, but it is the same at 8,000 as it was at 2,000...
 
We have 2 02 Vipers in the stable with over 8500 miles on them and they still run like the day they were bought...Strong. JB, my older brother has an 02 Viper ER that he's looking to sell, it has 3500 miles on it, rear heat exchanger, shock upgrade kit, 96 studs down the middle and very clean. It's stored inside and trailered in a enclosed trailer. He bought a new Warrior in 04 and has not riddin the Viper since. We would take it with us for a back up sled but, we ride Yamaha's and have never had to use it.
 
yes, 10,000 miles is very possible. take care of it and dont mod, and it will last. ask how it was stored for the summer, and what has been done as yearly maint. let us know!
 
9,400 and still running strong. I use seafoam and fogging oil when I store mine. Have a Tempaflow and a roller seconday, with a MSRX 136" skid. I run Amsoil Interceptor now, bur I ran Yamalube for break in and switched to regular Amsoil at 500 miles. My compression checks OK, but am told by a reliable source that I might want to check for piston collapse at this mileage. I intend to teardown and clean up ports on the jugs and replace pistons over the summer, if needed. I believe I got one of the good ones,per the above post. Before longtracking I regularly saw 116-118 mph with a onetime high of 122 on the old dream meter. Depending on price and overall condition of this sled, BUY IT!! There are a few minor issues that need to be adressed, but overall the Viper is a bulletproof machine.

yea around 10,000 miles i would say its time to get in there and check to make sure there are no stress cracks on the piston skirts. More than likely they will check out fine, but if not, it is real expensive when the pieces smash through the bottom of the case, better safe than sorry.
 
So chances are I could buy this sled and ride it next season without any problems. Then in the summer of 06 it would be wise to go through the engine. What would the 10000 mile rebuild include? What would a typical parts bill look like? I can turn the wrenches. I'm guessing new bottom end bearings, new pistons and rings, and a small over bore on the cylinders.
 
forget about the bottom end bearings and boring the cylinders, you won't need to. New pistons and rings are a good idea though. ;)!
 
my 97 sx has 7500 miles with pipes, i put that pipes on at 500 so 7000 miles and there fun. only problem i had was the jackshaft broke and then took out the chaincase.
 
I put a ton of miles on my '97 sx with pipes, ran like a top! Still running today with a new owner. ;)!
 
Here is my comp readings on a new viper s 2004 120 120 100 the 100 is on the pto side of course. after 6000 miles 120 120 100. no difference. I always take a reading on my new sleds so I know where the engine is at all the time. You will get probably 12 -13 thousand miles before you have to worry. My 02 viper was sold to a friend and has 15,000 on it and the comp is still good he is going to take it apart this summer as a precaution. :WayCool: :WayCool:
