Looking to upgrade my suspension, got a few ????

I know it's early in the summer yet, but I like to have everything ready to go early before winter starts. I have a '98 SRX and I am thinking about upgrading my suspension. I ride the ditches mostly and some powder. I know the SRX isn't made for that but I like to be able to cream anything in a race too :WayCool: The stock suspension kills my knees at the end of the day.

Do you guys think I should:

1. Long-travel my SRX shocks.

2. Find an Arctic Cat skid to put under the SRX

3. Ski-Doo skid

4. Polaris skid

5. Expert X or M-10 (I don't think I will be able to do either of these unless I find one really cheap or can come up with $1000 of spare cash :D:DP

If you said 2, 3, or 4, how hard will it be to mount another manufacturers skid in there?? I am interested in 121" and 136" skids. (If it is a 121" I can always add extensions.)
 
I have the maxx perf long travel kit in the '01 I got from Rules and that thing rides great in the rear. I honestly think it rides quite a bit better than the rear on my '01 SX 700R. Makes a HUGE difference over stock, definately worth it on not expensive either.

i think a polaris skid would be best for ride, but a lot of work. you can set them for a little or a lot of transfer, the edge skid is also one of the best riding out there. an ac skid has a lot of weight transfer no matter what you do to it. (hard to corner with the skis 2 feet in the air!) im sure long traveling and a correct revalving would be a big difference too.
 
viper shocks and springs bolt right into the rear of the srx. some years need limiters some dont, to get the most drop out (open travel) you will need to add transfer rods from max or pioneer or add a lengthener to your current stock rod of 7.5mm (per bruce at pioneer who developed the long travel yami stuff) there are a large number of posts in the archives about this, should answer most if not all your questions. you can get rear shocks and springs used on ty for about 100-150 have them revalved for your riding style for 40-50 each for 150-200 bux you can gitRdun alot less than the 350+ for the maxx perf kit. i personally went this route and used the viper springs with great results. ski
 
I may know where you can buy an artic cat skid frame. Complete they cost about $500. I purchased one and installed it in a MM several years ago. I don't know about ditch bangin but sure made a difference in the deep snow. PM me if you want details.
 
I've been doing some research and I think I should get my SRX shocks long-traveled. It sounds like they make a big difference. What about Viper shocks??? Would the ride on those be even better??? Even if they were from an '02 and not the "updated" shocks, I could get them revalved, then would they ride better than long traveled SRX shocks....or are the long traveled SRX shocks better???

I'm probably confusing everyone.....lol

im sure it will make a big difference, but dont count on it being as good as a polaris or cat suspension.
 
That's one thing that I'm afraid of. What if the suspension is better but still not as good as I would like it to be??? I guess in that happens I'll just have to bite the bullet, start over and buy a whole different skid. Who knows, by that time I may be ready for a different sled....but will my wallet be ready....lol

thats what im trying to get at. i have a viper with the upgraded shocks and it could still use some improvement. it doesnt ride terrible, but it isnt nearly as good as a edge or cat skid. if you have the time and skill i would just swap skids and sell yours. it would probably be cheaper than long traveling yours.
 
I don't think I have the skill to put in a cat or polaris skid but I know someone that could probably help me with it. Are there instructions on this forum or any others on putting in anothers manufacturers skid??? Even if there are any instructions, I'm sure it's going to differ alot from sled to sled and skid to skid.
 
i can get polaris pro x measurements for you. i have mine torn apart in the garage right now. all you need to do is remove the stock suspension and drill new holes for the mounts and a couple support plates. not really much to it.

That would be great if you could mail me some measurements for a Pro-X skid. What year SRX are you putting that in??? I think mounting that suspension in any year SRX should be pretty much the same shouldn't it?? How hard are Pro-X parts to find?? My best bet would probably be E-bay. Any other websites that would have parts for sale...I am a member at Snowmobile Fanatics so I'll keep an eye out there.

i actually have a pro x as a second sled no swaps except long tracking my viper. the measurements on the pro x should be correct if i measure from the top of the tunnel and from the driveshaft, and you need to do the same. parts arent that hard to find, a lot of it is edge stuff. if your looking for a skid try www.hardcoresledder.com the pro x has remote resevoir clickers, lot of adjustments and 13.9" of travel. if you want something to suck up the hard, fast moguls this is the one to get. i think you can get one for less than $500. i will get measurements and post them asap.
 
i have measurements. i looked under the viper and it will work nicely. i will post a diagram tommorrow. it looks like an easy swap. you can use the stock rear reinforcement plates and move the center ones forward appx. 7" for the front mount. the fronts dont get used. you will definatly have to long travel the front if you go this route. the rear ride height will be a little taller than a yamaha long travel. but not more than 1.5" - 2" because the pro x skid has 4" - 5" of sit in.
 
front brackets

Just take your front mounts and switch sides and turn them upside down. YOu will have to grind a notch out of them for them to sit flush, but it will work and won't cost a penny. Also, if you extend the front, you will have to get longer radius rods also, if not your front will not be able to extend all the way out when there is no weight on the front, and might break the rods. Atleast when I put the extensions on my ohlins and used the adjustable shock mounts this is what I came across. I bought a max performance front end kit to match the front with the rear, and it work great. Long traveling it was the best decision I made. If you end up going with viper shocks, you might want to have them revalved for your weight, you are awfully light.
 
I went with a polaris edge skid in my 03 rx-1, real simple to install, rides real close to a m-10 i'm thinking about putting one in one of my vipers
