DCS problem with SLP pipes

I ran my 2004 Viper S with SLP pipes in a Dyno test today (147hp@8800rpm), but got problem with the DCS althoug we had moved the sensor away from the engine and onto the radiator hose. I've heard a rumour about replacing the sensor with a resistor? Anyone who knows anything about that?

I think you need to mod the head so all three cylinders have the same compression. Check out SLPs web site, there is a tech bulletin.

Do you know where? I can't find it...
But I would preffer to get rid of the sensor instead
 
in my opinion it is just asking for trouble to run triple pipes on a viper without the head mod, opticool gasket, and rear heat exchanger. All essential to reliability.
 
yes please provide a link to a bulletin recomending cutting the head. I can't find one and as my head is being cut right now due to a catastrophic failure last season jettings specs from slp would be really cool.

I cannot find anything on cutting the head on SLP's website. I have over two seasons on my SLP piped 03 mtn viper and have not had a single problem. I wonder if the DCS is what is causing the problems. The 03 mtn vipers didnt come with DCS and have a rear heat exchanger stock so I think that is a big reason why I havent had any problems.

If you go onto slp's web site and look under there technical information pages you will find the instructions for installing the SLP pipes and in those instructions is shows what the jetting and clutching recommendations for altitude and temp. I am running 160's for main jets and mainly ride hatchers pass and eureka and dont have any problems, just gas oil and ride.

I've got slp specs, I was talking about cut head specs. Don't think the failure was a lean burn down something else just went horribly wrong and still haven't figured out exactly what.
 
A friend of mine also had a problem with the dcs on an 04 mtn viper with slp pipes. We tuned and tuned on his sled and it never ran much better than stock. We called slp and they told us that it was a tuning problem on our parts. Finally, we unplugged the dcs, which made lights flash on the guage, but the viper finally wanted to run. If anyone gets any specific info from slp about this issue, please post it!!!

I have now measured the sensor, and will replace it with a 470kohm resistor. Just waiting for some snow, and then I can tell you if it worked or not...

This does not make sense. If the DCS light is not flashing, DCS is not on. Was the DCS light flashing when the sled was running like stock and DCS was connected?
 
I may have a solution for you to run your 04 viper with pipes and DCS. the part # for a 04 viper sensor is 8FE-85780-00-00. The part # for a 2002 SRX (with triple pipes) sensor is 8DN-85780-00-00. The difference between the 8FE and the 8DN may be because of the frequency these sensors read between the viper coming stock with a single pipe and the srx with triple pipes. I cant guarantee that this is the solution however makes perfect sense to me. Im saying that if i had an 04 piped viper i would invest in a 2002 srx sensor. Why not have the reliablility of pipes and a knock sensor?

That sounds logical! Maybe worth a try before using a resistor instead. Do you know if they look the same, with the same thread (?) and so on?

they should be the same thread hell if they are not.. go to a hardware store and pick up an adapter and some teflon tape. but im pretty sure they are the same fitting. atleast it looks like it in the pictures on yamaha parts page

The cdi box, (ecm) was probably trying to send a pulse signal to the operator that the DCs was not functioning. There was no input from the DCs sensor because the circuit was open

When the sled was running poorly, (about like stock), the dcs was plugged in, but nothing was flashing on the dash to indicate a dcs problem. When the dcs was unplugged, a light was flashing on the dash, but the viper ran well. It just doesn't sound right, but that's how he's still running it.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong....
My understanding is this....the dcs sensor is a knock sensor (detonation sensor) This is a sensor that generates a ac signal to the ignition module when the engine is running. when the engine knocks (detonates) the ac signal changes from what the ignition module is expecting...so it starts retarding the timing to reduce detonation. If you replace the sensor with a resistor then the no ac signal will come from the sensor and the light is going to come on... I don't think a resistor is going to fix it..I'd fix the heads to get the compression right..and take it from there..
 
According to SLP no modifications should be needed, I've asked them about the problem. Here's the reply I got:
"On the snow there should not be any problem with the system. On rare occasion there has been an over sensitive sensor where a new one corrected the problem. The engine does not require any modifications with SLP pipes so no head modification recommended"

And I know a guy who replaced it with a resistor, and the DCS indicator did not flash after that, so either I'll try that or a SRX sensor as soon as there's snow on the ground
