Viper tripple vs. stock SRX tripple

I beleive it is because of the CDI, the viper with a single pipe runs a lot of timing at 8500 rpm to maximze power. When adding pipes they run them past them to get back to civilized timing after 8500, problem is when letting off of that and bringing the R's back through the high timing range. You must feather the gas after a hard to run to help get through this range, or just jet it so fat your running 7-8 mpg. I'm optimistic with the CPR head mod, opticool, rear heat exhanger, and good jetting they are just as reliable. Also the viper has higher CR on the MAG and CENTER cyl and those are the two that are prone to burning down (head mods lowers this CR to match the PTO cly).
Never; ever seen a piped Viper get near the fuel consumption of a SRX. Instead of buying a Viper & adding pipes; buy a SRX & long travel the front & rear. If you then port the SRX your piped Viper won,t even be close. I have seen this scenario played out time & time again.

Too true. Piped Vipers use a lot of fuel with little improvement to performace.
Now I'm confused everything I read on here says that piped viper really come to life, 30+hp improvement, etc. The SLPs on two differenct sleds pull around 12mpg with thier jet specs, what does a SRX pull?
SRX has way more torque & hp is at a lower rpm. Anyone that has owned a good running SRX & has sold has said...What the $%&^! was I thinking? The only thing lacking in a SRX is a good rear skid for riding big bumps. Look at an X-pert X or new Bender rear skid; bolt it on & long travel the front & you will run with any piped Viper out there with way more reliability & allmost double the gas mileage. Been der dun dat seen it. Viper is a great reliable ; easy on fuel performing trail sled in stock form!

I don't know how you could add 30 horses too a viper and get little improvement on performance!! I need another beer!!
Yep...add 30 hp with pipes & porting & get 8 mpg. & questionable reliability...or ride a basically stock SRX & get 14 mpg. Run a piped Viper against a dialed in SRX stock & get your answer & see for your self. 30 hp more from a stock piped Viper???? No way no how!!!!!!!!!

Not so sure about "little improvement to performance" but the gas mileage does blow. Piping your viper will make it just as powerfull as an srx. I do agree with turk, you will have alot less headaches if you just buy an srx, and fix the suspension. has anyone tried bender pipes with an srx cdi box? Last year i tried a two degree key in backwards for about one tank of gas, and was a little scared to lean it out alot, wash at part throttle seems hard to read. clutched @ 9000 w/ cpr's. I'm thinking run the three degree key backwards, tighten up the squish, clutch @ 9000, instead of 9200 rpm.

Several years ago, two Viper owners in our group added triple pipes but made no other modifications. Both sleds ended up using excessive amounts of fuel, due to the jetting needed to produce an acceptable plug color. When judged along side of stock Vipers and other sleds, neither piped Viper performed much different that before the pipes were added.

one that has been hand assembled by caring hands, doing it for love of the sport, is alot more likely to be reliable than one that was assembled by a factory worker doing it for the money.
Factory is warranteed with proven reliability.
I'm not nockin this sled, but I really do not know betheviper or his qualifications. as I said, "assembly sleds are proven". It's a far better investment.
I'm a believer of : "once you mess with it, it will never be the same." I seen it many many times in my 25+ years with sleds and bikes.

guys sense were on the subject of timing in a viper & etc.this is what i have.an srx with a viper gauge,harness,cdi & so forth.what should i do with my timing on this sled???????should i try advancing the timing some how?,could this be my problem with the sled falling on it's face???& how can i check the timing??

well you're entitled to your opinion, but personally I would think scott is far more qualified to assemble a sled than anyone on the factory floor in Shizouka, not saying they're not qualified, but they know only there piece, not the whole system, experienced wrench arms have done the whole thing top to bottom, many times, and care about it alot more than a factory worker would. the warranty he can't offer, that's true, but half the time the manufacturer doesn't honour the damned thing anyways. (worked at a dealer, this is one I know firsthand). as far as once you've messed with it it'll never be the same.. well that depends on how you assemble it now doesn't it, and if you do it properly it should be exactly the same as it was before. there's no magical fairies installed at the factory that get out once you open it up.

the viper cdi is too advanced for that motor i believe so im asking sould i buy a advance key or can i adjust it by turning the stator??

Bully, you should pm Betheviper, he had a viper box in his SRX.
Thats why racers from every type of motorsport will teardown and blueprint a motor, even when running in stock classes. Seems like BTV has probably changed more cylinders, than underwear. Just from reading his posts, I think i'd trust him working on my sled. M2C.

see this is why i installed a stock srx engine. people are always worried and i'd rather tell them that there is a stock srx engine with matching pipes and cdi and carbs.
myself i would prefer to buy something that has been messed with(by the right person)
most of the factory problems have been fixed
performance is usually better
and you usually get free stuff with them.
as for the guys that installed viper pipes and they didnt run better than the stock ones, they did something wrong.
srxbully, dont install that cdi box unless your drag racing it.
use your srx box.
that guage has nothing to do with the cdi box. you can use it with the srx box. the only thing you will need to do is trick the temp light into thinking it is warmed up. if you leave it unhooked it will blink. just wire a resistor to ground in line. if you search my post i think i listed the ohms reading. if not look in a manual and it will tell you what your sending unit lets trough at temp.
