Hi everyone!.

I just sold my 2003 RX-1 because I wanted a cheaper sled.

Right now I`m in really doubt what to buy, there are two sleds that I am considering.

The first one is a 2000mod Yamaha Mountain Max 700 triple, with 8000kilometers on the clock. The sled is all stock except from a lower painted wind shield and some end hooks on the bar. Track is two years old. Seller said that some bearings in the track wheels may needed to be replaced. Elsewise the sled was like new, except from some minor scratches in the trailing arms, wich can`t be avoided I guess.

The other sled is a 1999 Yamaha SRX 700 triple with 4500kilometers on the clock. This sled is extended to 141" with 2" lugs. The bar is rised, it has a heelclicker primary kit and comes with two different wind shields. The front is "highened" with some brackets. Except this it`s all stock. The seller said that the sled had two minor cracks in the hood (that was "welded" on the inside) and a little "whole" in the seat. (suppost to be very small).

The Mountain Max is 300$ cheaper then the SRX. The SRX is much more "within reach" when it comes to picking the sled up by car. SRX only 4 hours to drive, MM about 10. (one way).

I don`t know what sled to buy, 300$ might seem little but I don`t have that much money.

On the other side the SRX almost has twice as little milage as the Mountain Max, for all I know the primary on the MM might need a rebuild etc. and that shit costs money.

Please let me know what you think, I would really appreciate it.

Because of the miles on each sled you probably will have too put money into either,if it was me i'd go srx.

I would go SRX but...check the powervalves & cables; compression check & see if the primary is a little wobbly on the crank end. The 99 SRX,s had bad cranks too.

they did have bad cranks, but ALOT less likelly, and 99% of them have been taken care of already. I wouldnt worry about a bad crank. But never hurts to check, good point turk

SRX mountain mods can be an awesome sled, alittle tubbier than the MM, but the power is very very nice, combine that with the fact that it's that much closer and the mileage, hard to go wrong. but both are good sleds, would be hard to go wrong either way.

I just sold a 98 MSRX. Added 2 base gaskets, shaved the heads: reed spacers & jetted it up(SRX,s are notoriousely lean) The sled was big fun to ride & did very well in a 660' drag race.I owned 3 mm,s in various states of tune but all were piped. Takes a lot to = the hp of a stock SRX with a MM.

Thanks alot for all the replys guys !. Now I finally made up my mind. I will go with the SRX :).

This is the most active forum I have ever seen!:).

Guess the SRX will be somewhat easier to handle since the track is alittle shorter?.

How much do they weigh?.

Joakim

srx's aren't light, published dry weight is 522, with oil, coolant etc you will probably be looking at at least 535 lbs. I have never weighed one though, it is just a guess

the width of the skis is pretty darn important if you are talking about running the real deep powder. A nice set of wide skis really does a ton in holding the front end up. Actual ski stance isn't so critical, doesn't really do anything for floatation. Wide front ends will be good on the trails, but make it hard to sidehill (pull up on one ski). Narrow front ends are much easier to side hill but lift a lot more ski on trails and aren't as stable through the bumps. Just depends on where you will be doing the majority of your riding.

I guess it's ok, but I didn't really care about the steer and that crack in the hood, or how the rear part of the tunnel is bolted on (rear cooler tubing visible) and it looks as if the registration number plate is riveted to the rear cooler! Hope not. The rear end is kind of high, which is good in powder but I think it will if not suck, then not be very good on the trails because the high rear end forces the already heavy nose end to the ground, but it's hard to tell the balance of the sled from those pictures. If you had gotten it for say 46-47000 then it would have been a good buy, but it still depends on the condition of the rest of the sled. I hope you have the cash to glue the hood at least (at a dealer), and to take a clutch rebuild if that has not been already done. Also look for leaky powervalves, they sometimes tend to leak due to all the additives in the gas here in norway. Get some more pics when you pick up the sled and send them, and then I will take a closer look. Btw, when are you going to pick it up?

Thanks for the reply Norwegian ! :).

Yes, I have also noticed the cracks in the hood and the visible cooling tube. I think the tunnel extension looked kind of "home made" but I guess it looks OK to be home made, the best would be to buy a kit from mountainperformance or trackusa but this guy obviously didn`t bother.

Repairing the hood is "easy", or atlest I think so. I`ve restored 4-5 bikes + my car so I think I will be able to repair it my self. However, I might take the hood to a professional painter to get the best result though.

I havent thought of the "ski pressure" , hope it will be OK so that it`s OK to ride in the trials with. However, we rarely ride in packed trials.

I guess to much ski pressure isn`t good when it comes to climbing, I hear they say that the skis shouldn`t touch the ground.. .

The best part is that I have managed to get the price down to 40.000nkr now.
First I told him that 50.000 was way to much for me. Then he said "OK, 45.000" , then I said, let me think about it. Suddenly he called me and said that there was another guy who had bid 45.000,- now, and he wanted to tell me since I was the first one to show "interest". Then I said, "well, I`m sorry but it`s still to much for me". Then the seller said "OK, 42.000,- last offer" .

I have an old V-Max 540 in my garage, with a Rotax 583 engine and a 345/44mm lugs Thundercat track, the sled is a wreck and I told him about this, and then I said, I can give you 40.000,- and this "wreck sled" , and then he said it was OK.

So now I just have to explain everything to my parents and hope that they will sign the loan since I need "kausjonista" .

What do you think ?.

One heck of a deal, you got rid of that v-max too, I wonder what he wanted that sled for. LOL. 40 000 for that sled is a great price. How much do you need to loan? Remember, the banks have fees for this and that plus "panteattest", which goes to Brønnøysund registers. You are looking at easily 3000+ before you even get the loan. Can't you somehow get 40 000? Would be much cheaper, plus you wouldn't have to have the total insurance package (Kasko), if you didn't have a loan on it. Kasko is rather expensive.. I looked up my 02 srx and it was like 13 000++ with kasko, but just under 2500 with responsibility, theft and fire. (Ansvar, brann og tyveri). When picking up the sled you really should look at the belly pan or the bulkhead for dents. The bulkhead is the single most expensive part to replace on the whole sled! If the sled has a bellypan protector on it, knock on it, listening for holes, if you detect any, remove bellypan protector to take a closer look. Look very closely at the heat exchangers for leaks, the one in front is the most expensive to replace if it leaks. Also, grab the primary and move from side to side and up and down, checking for slack. Turn it arount checking for wobble (kast). Also see if any pieces in the suspension are broken off and welded back together. All together, I would estimate at least 10 000 in parts, labour, registration, bank loan fees, transportation etc etc before you can fill it up an let it rip.
One last thing, get ahold of a compression tester, from the tech people I have heard that all cyls should be within 10% of each other. Very important.
