The 2006 F7 is really fast i say a power up kit for the 98 and something to give you traction.

adding base gaskets are going to change the porting right??? To make it the same as the 2001's.

REAL WORLD F-7,s ARE NOT THAT FAST. 05-06 ARE DIAMOND DRIVE AND HAVE LOST TOP SPEED. THE 03 04 CAN BE VERY FAST WITH ECU CHANGES, TIMING KEYS, TWIN PIPES AND BEWARE SOME ARE F-8,s!! THEY STILL ARE VERY FAST AT THE GRASS DRAGS. ANY PORT TIMING CHANGES ON A 98-99 SRX PROBELY GET YA TO WHAT A 00-02 IS STOCK. RACE A F-7 IN A LONG HAUL, SRX WILL WHIP IT!! 3:16 (tony)

Im a tried and true YAMAHA owner!! But let me tell ya, if you come up against any of these F8 ARCTIC CATS look out they are fast .. I can speak of this first hand , my nephfews F8 is just unreal!!! I have spent alot of money to keep up with him ,and the key word here is just keep up,thats about all I can do.My 2000SRX has a SIMONS 780 KIT, clutched to perfection, I put, dare I say, a ARCTICAT skid in it for better transfer and it worked out great!!!!!. Now im installing a 8 tooth drive and RIPSAW track with 144 picks. Now maybe just maybe I,ll be able to beat this thing . When his sled was stock I would have no problem beating him ,even when mine was stock. But I have personally not seen any SRX handle a F8 .

So do you guys know if just adding 2 base gaskets to the 98 srx without shaving the head will give any gains?

I have heard so many horror stories from dudes changing clutching. I know guys that spent hundreds only to travel slower. My stock viper wasn't all that much slower than my buddies f-7. Now I have speedwerx triples on it and I think I should be able to keep in front of him.

How about some advice on traction? I don't care what you do to your engine or the clutch...if the sled don't grab the ground, snow or ice, you will lose the race. Years ago, a friend of mine had a stock Polaris TX 440 free air that used to smoke everything for 500'. V-Max's, Indy 600's, SRX's, ElTigre's everything. He had a boat load of studs and couldn't spin the track if he wanted to.
Saw the same thing last Sunday: A guy with a stock 800 Ski-Doo couldn't be beat for the same reason. No spin off the line. There were 700's, 800's, a 650 drag sled and a 650 Turbo drag sled. Beat them all time after time.
I've beat an F7 2 out of 2 so far with my SRX. Niether one of us was remotely competitive last Sunday due to spining the track. My SRX and the F7 both have 192 trail studs. I know that the 800 doesn't have any more snort than my SRX or the F7 cause I've rode one...it wasn't impresive. In the races, it just didn't spin the track.
So, anybody got advice on good suspension set-up or studs for racing?

I agree I would like to know some good suspension setups for traction on a srx for a good holeshot also.

chisels picks on the outside so you can change them out fast for trail riding.set the fra on soft tighten the front shock loosen the trailingarm shock springs.modify trasfer rods for 1 1/2 gap.

For traction, you truly have to make up your mind on what conditions you will be racing in. Of it is going to be on ice, you need to get picks and probably steel if you are purely racing on ice. If you are racing on hardpack, I love my setup. I am running a 9830 camo track with 144 down the center. This track is definitely the way to go. I cannot recall ever loosing a hole shot with this setup on hardpack snow. My brother tried out the new Hacksaw on his srx this year with 96 studs in "V" pattern down the middle and we finally got results back on the track. When we raced that track against the 9830 with 144 down the center, the holeshot was pretty much even. My track was used and his was brand new. However, if you race him in the looser stuff, the hacksaw will not grab as hard as the 9830. My recommendation for traction is the 9830 with however many studs your please. We can also sell you this track if you would like, just send me a PM. I must admit, putting this track in my srx was BY FAR the best upgrade ever done to my sled. The next best thing done to my sled was clutching which also helps tremendously. Get the track first, then do clutching and the cat will fall flat on its face.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

FRA i think its called a full rate adjuster the coupler in front of your big rear shock.they are set at med from factory and can go hard or soft.if you race on ice you cant beat the woodys ice chisels they will blow away any bodys sled that is running all trail picks.blueflash said:what do you mean by "set the fra on soft" ?

Do what Bruce says with the 9830 track, and if your clutched and jetted correctly, you will beat a stock f-7! SRX's have an honest 142 HP, the newer sleds are have inflated Horsepower ratings in my opinion. I tear them up bad, and I don't have porting or bigbore. Just good clutching and traction. I'm on a Viper with SRX pipes, so should be the same deal.
