New Hacksaw...quick question

Just got my new Hacksaw, looks sweet.Ordered from Richmotorsports showed up the next day. I've read on some post that guys have clipped some of the nubs down to clear the front heat exch protectors
and others that have just let them rub down. I appreciate any feedback from
others who have had put the same track on a viper.
 
hacksaw clearance

The hacksaw will not rotate without alot of pressure on the nubs of the track against the front heat exchanger. I took a pair of Channel Lock fence pliers, the end cut style, and removed about 1/8'' from the ends of the nubs. Put the track on first, adjust to proper tension, then look up under the front to see where it rubs. Only remove enough to let the track rotate easily. The end cut pliers work great, they leave a nice straight cut. After marking lugs, I rotated the track and cut them from the rear of the sled, just hold your snowflap up out of the way. Worked excellent for me. The track will wear in more if needed after you do this.
 
Yup, I used the same tool. It looks like a side cutters only with the jaws on the end instead of the side. My hacksaw was rubbing pretty good, I would not have wanted to leave it.
 
Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm just wondering though if the clearance is the same on an SRX as a Viper, or maybe you were talking about a viper. Also did either of you stud your hacksaws, was concerned about stud clearance as well. I have 1.08 hornets
about 3/8 above the lug.
 
i clipped mine the same way- with the end nips. worked perfect. my buddy put a hacksaw on his 02 sxr 600 and it rubbed pretty bad. we were wondering why he could only get 75 mph out of his sled. he brought it back to the dealer and they clipped it, and said it would definitely contribute to top speed loss. hasn't had the chance to open 'er up yet though-- we've had nothing but RAIN ever since.

blueblood- i think those studs would be fine-- my viper's got 1.17 woodys studs and 1"camo 9830. no probs yet
 
I put the 1.25" ice ripper on my viper. Rubs bad. First time out, top speed was 94. 450 miles later I saw 104. So, the lugs are wearing down some. I'm still going to cut mine though. Not really liking the idea of it rubbing at all. Guys behind me can smell the rubber.

Can anyone provide a photo, or a link to a photo, of the tool your talking about?
 
How is that ice ripper track? I have the 1" ice claw and love it, but I would probably want to go to the ice ripper for my next track.
 
Not much time on it yet. I did hit some pretty icy corners last weekend with not much sliding. Not the grip of studs, but certianly kept the sled under me.
 
One last question, would it be easier for me to clip my track down before installing?
and if so exactly which nubs should I clip? Is it basically the lugs inline with the windows?

If you never plan on studding the track, then I'd remove the front protectors while you have the track out.

I just put on a Camoplast Energy 1" on my 2001 sxr 600 this year and was surprised at how close the track lugs would have been against the protectors. Especially when you 've got ice build up etc. I pulled mine out and I now have lots of room up there. I had to drill out four rivets. Simple!!

Like I said, if you're not going to stud the beast then get them out of there.

Why would you pull the protectors out if you had studs????? How would the protectors get in the way of your studs when they are lined up over the windows of your track???

Blueblood, just trim 1/4 inch off the lugs where your windows are and you'll be good to go. You have plenty of room for the studs you've choosen. I did this just last week and it worked great. LEAVE YOUR PROTECTORS IN.
 
I believe that some have misread my post.

The protectors are there to prevent the track lugs from getting too close to the heat exchanger which might allow the studs (if you have them installed) to actually contact the exchanger and literally "tear it to shreds", leaving you stranded.

In my post, I suggested removing the protectors ONLY if you were NOT going to stud the track. The protectors that Yamaha installed are actually larger (thicker) than they need to be since most studs do not protrude 0.75" past the track lugs.

Bottom line is that without a studded track, the protectors really don't do anything. Therefore you can remove them to make more room for a deeper lug track. It's probably easier to remove the protectors than hack up your new track!!

If you think you might stud at a later date, then leave them in.

I have a hacksaw in my '01 SRX with the roetin 1.08 hornets (the studs ROCK by the way), and the track rubbed the protectors like a b*tch when i installed it, so much so that it ripped out my protectors (a lot of this is because i used aluminum rivets to hold them in instead of stainless, but the point is that the track rubs pretty good). No i dont have any protectors in so I have to rip it all back out to reinstall them. I would clip the track over the windows, it takes quite a while to wear in.
 
I put the 1" hacksaw on my '00 SRX and mine seem to rub very little. If we would get some frigin snow I could go out and have some fun.

i would clip them too- instead of waiting. i rode mine for about 100 miles before i clipped it, and i could feel it rub when i slowed almost to a stop-- felt like you had the brake on just a tad. it didn't seem to be getting any better and i didn't feel like running it another 200 miles like that. sometimes my season is only 500 miles! probably less this year- with all this RAIN.
