viper top speed

Yeah the speedo's are off,you need too ground off one tooth off the spline. If that is the case I was 116 on the dream-o meter.

Glad to see some of you are realistic. 4 Vipers were as follows:

1 ER 102mph stock
2 ER 102.7 mph stock
3 STD 105.6 mph stock
4 STD 109.2 mph clutched and can

Speedos were any where from 112 to 120.9.

I have seen 137 on my dream meter and I'm no where near that fast. I can take all these vipers from bottom to top with complete ease.

My 02 stock viper with 53/43 helix and green spring got 112 on gps last year on a 200 acre lake glare ice. First run was 108 warm engine cold pipe, next run was 112. Dreamometer read 126 for 2nd run.

Speedometer are always off on sleds, since the track is spinning. You need a real good trail machine to do an actual 120mph. I seen my friends 99 SRX 700 do 118.3 mph on the river (good cluthing no mottor mods.). It still takes a pretty good sled to go over 100mph, and if my viper goes between 100 and 105 mph I will be quite happy with that.

Top Speed

My 02 Viper, 144 studs and 53/43 Helix with green secondary spring ran 112 on glare ice on a 200 acre lake last year. Dreamometer said 128. On snow I can get dreamometer to 108, on hardpack sometimes to 118.

Viper with CPR pipes 117-118 on Stalker radar with stock gearing, 96 studs, full height suspension. Dream meter reads 134.

if you have studs and you're on good clean ice you aren't spinning. Sleds speedo's in general are just inherently high. Some are more accurate than others, yamaha digital's definately aren't on the accurate side of the spectrum.

I had read somewhere yamaha figured it was a good way for th eriders to avoid excessive speeding and tickets. they figured with a 45 mph limit that is in a lot of places, when it says you are speeding you wont be. you will be the guy going by at like 55-60 and cant believe the cop let you go. in actuality, you were going like 46 lol!

Man I must have one of the junk vipers. Best I have seen was 92mph on the speedo. I do have the 2 teeth removed for 8 tooth drivers. I am also turning a 1.5x 136 track. It was also 5inch deep wet heavy snow. Slow piece of $hit, might be time for a warrior. LOL In the ditches 55 is fast enough. Maxdlx

Hey Maxdlx, That top speed would be higher if you dropped some more weight......... OFF THE DRIVER HAHAHAAHAHAHA!! Sorry man, I HAD to say it.

Early 2002 Vipers with stock track, and no studs were the fastest of the stock ones, but only in optimal conditions. Triple piped Vipers will pull a little more gear so can a go a little higher, but that usually defeats the reason for putting triples on.

I ran several runs with an early 02 in stock setup on a 19 mile lake. Top sustained speed on the speedo ranged anywhere from around 100 to 127 (seen 130+ when it spun), which is still the top number I have seen. Real speed likely quite a bit below that . . .

ding,

My 02 is only pulling around 105-105 stock, but does have e-start and rev. Should i run my track as loose as possible to gain more speed. Also, when I bought it the chain was pretty tight, would this hold back speed? I realize the e-start and reverse will cost 5 or more mph. Thanks for the help.

Stock 02 I had did 107 mph with a little clutch work. Some people say 121!! Come on. It wont even do that tripple piped! The speedos are off with those for sure!!

I guess they would be off a few miles per hour but it all depends on conditions, hard pack snow i read 116 mph but differs a lot in conditions and lenth of runs, Im sure on near glare ice i would see at least 120 on the speedo.
Of course if you are running a viper with different sprokets and bigger lug tracks with reverse and electric start you wont be near the max, also a rider that weighs 160 vs a 220 pound rider would make a difference as well.
As for how acurate the gauges might be ?
Two years ago i was side by side with my friends 2003 viper and my 2000 xc 700 we were dead even and when i asked how fast he was going he said 112 vs my 110 on my analog gauge.

but the fact is is that it is common practice to overdrive the speedos to be optomistic. they all do it, just how it is. and there is always track spin to really throw things off!
