I don't have any numbers compiled yet on oil useage to fuel but its comming. But holy cow my machine is smokey. Every time I come to a stop there is an ominous cloud that follows. First start of the day is brutal. When the sled gets the first couple blips you'd say that the fog came in. When i give the sled a goose on the trail el puffo. Only 1300 kms on the machine so I don't think it would be rings. I kinda think it may be in jetting or oil pump adj. but I'm sure that cable is at factory spec. May be normal I don't know.

Mine is preety bad as well, and it just started being like that too for no reason, didnt adjust anything or change oil. Oil cable is exactly factory spec, but im thinking of leaning it out as im burning oil as if it was going out of style.

To add to what ^^^^ posted, make sure the cable is seated in the throttle block and the adjuster all the way.

Mine doesn't smoke hardly at all.
My brother-in-laws indy 500 smokes like a mofo, it's almost hard to be near it when the thing starts up.

Real bad in the morning, seems to build up, but once it gets going it's pretty minimal or no worse then the MXZ I ride with. But man I am getting old I use to love that smell, now I think I need a couple more strokes..

My 2001 700 Venture with 20,000km's that's right 12,500 miles doesn't smoke hardly at all. Check your adjustments. Fuel/oil ratio should be 50:1.
Mine does, however, backfire the odd time on startup. I think it's due to stopping and shutting it off to quickly. I should let it idle for several seconds, thus hopefully blowing out any unburnt fuel.

Mine smokes terribly when i first start it. So bad that it is very hard to get it out of the trailer before dieing from the fumes. It gets so bad that I can't see across my trailer. After it has ran for a bit tho it seems to be very good. As long as I get on it hard for a while! I have checked plugs after a long hard run. They are a perfect brown with no oil staining. So I guess mine is OK... I also pound thru the oil in my Viper, not so bad on the VMax. I dunno....

My V Max smoked pretty bad before I rebuilt it, about half a tank of oil per tank of fuel was my usage..... since then I don't know... haven't had a chance to ride it. In the garage right now I have the gas in the tank mixed to about 50:1 for break in (only a gallon of it though so it will be easy to thin it out) so it smokes a bit... especially at start up... but at a fast idle after a few minutes it seems ok to me.
Correct me if I'm wrong... but the brand of oil you use can effect smoke output. Yammilube smokes more than Amsoil, Klotz... right??

Starting to realize it has been 19 years, but I think I hooked up with an exceptional unit.... fall of 02 she says "you should get a snowmobile" "it has to be a yamaha" "it has to be a new one" so.... the 2002 VMax 600... that one is a smoker... then in 2004 she tells me "you should have a new sled, I will take the old one...." so.... 2004 Viper.... also a smoker.... well this year she decided a new truck prolly the best bet so we now have an 06 GMC 2500hd on the way.... that one to be a non smoker ;D we decided gas motor.
Anyway, back on topic.... I have always felt that my oil was set a bit high. I have just now ordered a manual, (I did the mega warranty thing) ordered the viper one and figure the VMax will be close enough to the viper to use the same book. I am hoping that i can drop oil consumption and the amount of smoke a bit by lowering the oil. I guess I kind of question if the dealer/manufacturer sets them to oil extra as a safety margin?
BTW, wife of those 19 years also thought i should have a jeep. Came home one day and told me to head out to a small town a few miles from here and buy one that she saw on the side of the road.... but that is a different forum. she is a keeper!
