Help Want to install a 2002 Viper Motor in a 1999 SRX

Hey guys has anyone ever installed a Viper motor in a SRX. My roomate blew the mag side piston, rings, head and cylinder and he has a complete Viper motor to install. Questions. Will i need to swap the cdi? Will the stock srx clutch be ok? will the DCS cause a problem? can i disconnect it? SRX pipes do they bolt right up? any other concerns should i be aware of. Any help will be much appreciated.

nothing will work, the sled has different igintion, guage, pipes, manifolds, carb settings,cooling system, clutch settings and on and on

if you had everything and i mean everything, exhuast,wiring, colling parts, carbs, clutch, guage, drive shaft, you could convert the sled.
 
he does have the exhaust but we were thinking the srx pipes might bolt right on, he bought a wrecked viper and he does have all the wiring, carbs, cooling, airbox. has anyone ever done this. I thought i seen someone here that has done this
 
Why not try and sell the Viper engine and pick up one for an SRX. Makes a lot more sense. Not sure why you would want to put an underpowered engine in a heavier sled?
 
We want to get this back on the snow as soon as possible. its already been down since the weekend. We do have everything to do this conversion. The 1999 srx i think came stock with around 138HP the Viper stock is 125HP and with the srx tripples we were thinking it would add maybe 10HP which is pretty close to a stock SRX. Has anyone successfully installed the viper motor in a SRX.
 
I might be interested in the old bottom end.

I have heard of using srx pipes on a viper, thats basicly what your looking to do
 
if he wants to bigbore it, now's as good a time as any.

to make those pipes work you'll need an adapter to go on the Viper cylinders to use the SRX downpipes.

easiest way would be to swap the viper cylinders, head and pistons onto the SRX, get an adapter made for the exhaust, I don't see any other issues... except the staggered compression, maybe replacing that SRX head is a good idea. it'll be a bastard motor, but the shorter exh will up the RPM abit, as will the vipers hotter porting, without running any math I wanna say 8600-8700, which is right on the edge of where the CDI starts to shut the fun off, but the moral of the storey is it'll run.
 
the ignition system from 300watt viper will not work with the 99 175 watt ignition system, your gonna need to change the stator out as well to the 99 unit. On the flywheel youd need to grind off the tdc trigger on the flywheel for the 3d ign on the viper. you cant just use the 99 flywheel as they are differnt sizes and the p/u coil is mounted in a differnt spot on the case.

The exh port is ALOT longer on the srx then a viper and youd need to make adapters so the viper exh port would be the same length as the srx cylinders, or it will be running ALOT more then 86/8700rpm, more like 9400+ rpm and will not make very good power as your moving everything way up too high in rpm, the pipes only work till 8650rpm on a srx, and your srx cdi retards the timing too much to run it at high the higher rpm.

If you were to use the entire viper system your gonna have fun, cause youll need to switch everything over, grips, wiring harness,cdi,all relays,and the hood harness is gonna drive you nuts cause its all way differnt for the digital guage, also the voltage regulator,and other elctrical componets are on oppisite sides of the sleds, your really gonna get into a mess with this.

Well i have not been online in a couple of days because we have been trying to install a 2002 viper motor in a 1999 srx and I must say it been a big job we have installed the viper wiring, Viper dispaly wich looks wicked i will post picks to show you guys, exhaust and motor but we have run into a little bind it runs really good but it over heats. We used the SRX water bottle becuase it had 3 hook ups. The Viper bottle has onlyt 2 hook ups. What happens is when you first start the motor and let is run for a bit 5 minutes the heat exhangers feel warm then drive the seld for 7 minutes and the temp light comes on and the motor is really hot to the touch and the heat exchangers are cold like its not circulating right. does anybody have any ideas do you think its an air lock. You gotta bleed the cooling system on the Viper motor. I read somewhere on here how to do it. It had to do with using the carb coolant switch and puling it out slightly once the sled gets warm. It seems to work quite well as I just installed a rear heat exchanger on my 02 Viper. I burped it a least 3 times on the stand. I have not ridden it yet as I am still recovering from surgery. Good luck.
 
the routing of the cooling system is different. the front cooler has an extra fitting on it for rerouting of coolant. the srx does this little trick in the water rail. vipers do this in the thermostat housing . post a picture of where your hoses go so i can figure out what you did.

We took yesterday off and we are going back at it tonight, I lent out my camera and will post pics tonight. Before we get back at it this is how he have the coolant connected.
Looking at where the hoses connect on the viper from the coolant bottle at the back it connects to the heat exchanger same as the SRX. The viper has only one hole coming out the front (SRX has 2, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom) We used the SRX coolant Bottle. The top hole we have the thermostat in the middle of the hose connected to the Viper HEAD. a little hose connects to the carb. We then connected the hose from the water pump to the bottom hole of the SRX coolant bottle.
I have been trying to get pictures of how the Vipers coolant is all connected but can't find any. I don't know but i'm thinking the Vipers had a tee somewhere in the system.
On the Vipers where does the hose connect to from the water pump.
 
Still over heating

Well the first thing we did was lift the back end and burped the back bleed hole the we raised the front about 3 feet in the air and let it run for 10 minutes the rear heat exchangers were the hottest i've felt them so far so my roomate took it for a little rip and it over heated. thinking it might be the thermostat we changed it artound burped it again and it still over heated. Its got to be the way it is hooked up. Here are a few pics of the SRV and the cooling.
