Big liquid twin in phazer chasis

I have a very custom 84 phazer project sled that has been slowly modified over the course of 15 years. It has a 98 pro-action suspension from an srx, custom extended tunnel for 121" new seat, new paint job, 97 venture skis w/ plastic skins, and is currently running a 77 air cooled exciter engine. My dad purchased this sled without a motor and all of the modifications are used parts done by us. I am looking for a big liquid cooled twin to put in it. I have heat exchanger from a vintage srx and some running board heat exchangers from a polaris. I could use any combination of these to accomodate for the liquid cooling. I was wondering what would be my engine options. I am a yamaha loyolist, but the best option i could find is a rotax 670. I have a lead on a recked one very cheap, but we are not sure if it will fit since the carbs are crankcase-mounted. I want it to function like stock (closeable hood, etc.). Anyone have any experience with any motors fitting in this chasis? Arctic wildcat 700? Polaris? Yam 600? and has anyone successfully put a 670 rotax in this chasis? Any help would be appreciated.
 
This will be quite a project I remember seeing a set of pipes on ebay a couple of years ago to put a 570 exciter engine in a phazer, Go to snow west someone there maybe able to help! But I would use a 97-98 600 vmax twin and pipe that should work!!
 
you might be better with a bike radiator than a vintage SRX rad, maybe something with fan attached. another posability could be a heater core from a car. if nothing else it give more size option and you could put em all over
 
I think you are wasting your time, I would find a 485 Phazer motor and mod it up a bit..You are going to put a heavy liquid motor in and all the coolers etc..etc..and you are going to loose the fact that the Phazer body is light and easy to handle...You could find a 485 motor put a pipe, cold air intake, reeds and you would be up tp 80-90 hp with less weight,still have relibilty..With the liquid motor you are going to find that the hp is around the same but you are alot heavier...Anyways good luck with the project let us know how you made out !!!!!
 
Thanks, i hope it goes well. I was hoping to score this broke down MXZ for next to nothing from a friend. I will have to rebuild the motor, so maybe a few go-fast parts are in store too. If that does not work out, i might be in search of a stocker motor for it, i have an aaen pipe adapted onto the 440 already. But i am really hoping for over the torque of the larger twin. I am still unsure. I got a post from a guy at snowest who did it, i will ask him some questions help me w/ my final decision. Thanks to everyone. What do you guys think, is it worth the extra weight of the liquid 670 or should i just mod a phazer motor? Thanks for the posts.
 
riffer alot depends on where and how you want to ride ? In twisty trails or off trail keep it light and don't downplay the performance of a well modded 485 ! If you run open spaces and or lakes then the L.C. my suit you better ?
 
Cool idea I would love to see a 700 non powervalve triple in a 93 exciter IIsx with 136" ripsaw proaction rear updated with bender mono and ohlin front shocks and plastic skis
newer secondary and juice brakes wow this would be an awesome sled!!!!
 
My dad changed his mind. He doesnt want to "butcher up" a sled that runs so good, since he has had lots of work into the motor, and my sister mostly drives it. Our friend however, is selling an exciter, so he said if we're gonna do it we cant to a half way job. He wants to do a custom tunnel extension, plastic skis, 136-144" skid, 1.25" ripsaw track, at least a 670 maybe 700, whichever we find cheapest, custom paint job. Thoughts? I want this to be the best all around sled possible. Great boondocker, great trailrider, and great in the ditches, especially when they're blown full of snow. Suggestions welcome, for motor (cheper is better), skid, skis, and other affordable upgrades. Thanks for all your help guys.
 
well screw the Rotax, you'll run into a space problem because of the rotary valve engine and the carbs being lower, starting with the exciter is a much better idea because it already has the cooling system in it. We put several different engines in those chassis in the day, a friend of mine built kits to put AC twins in Exciters, as well as we put 540 Vmax's in PZ's, my buddy just sold his PZ with a 650 Indy in it. The guy who put the twins in the EX's still has the install kits so if you're gonna put a twin in one he could sell you a custom motor mount plate. Triples fit in them as well............
 
no, its not, I was gonna build an Avalanche at the time, however, I didn't want the clutch hanging out the side of the cover, so I opted to take 2 Kawi Interceptor 550's and make a triple out of them, it was a smaller package.
 
update:
bought 97 mxz 670 for parts, melted piston, parts ordered
bought 144 suspension from polaris switchback
have a lead on a good condition exciter
so far good deals
now for pipes....
 
Riff, I talked to my buddy that made those engine swap kits he has motor plates available, $100, you could mount that 670 to one and get it in there, but like I said the carbs may get in the steering post because of the rotary valve motor but some 38TMX's may fix that problem. Pipes, I would get some AAEN's or PSI's if you can find them. Good thing about Olav, tell him what you are doing and he would sell them to you un finished or ask him if he could weld them up in the EX jig, either way you'll have to do some fitting, the stock oil tank will get in your way, look at the pics of my 800 Kaw, I used a 540 Vmax tank and it hung on the chaincase and the strut mount, gets out of the way, then you have all kinds of room up front, I could give you pics of the tank mount if you want.

Rage, the Kawi worked mint, still running, ran it yesturday, did that project what, 16yrs ago. 144hp, 115 mph, not bad for a 87 Exciter.

R6, we had put numerous Polaris triple in Exciters, all worked good, 650's, XLT's, they were easy to mount because they are bottom mounted engines, again we used those motor plates my friend has, never tried like an SX triple, only because they weren't around then, no reason why it wouldn't work but using the stock mount configuration would take some time, unless you want to figure out how to mount it on the bottom, then we have a plate for you also.

Those plates are designed to use the front 2 stock mounts and plates, the rears you just make 2 little perches, set the rubbers on top of them. Would save a pile of time if you're transplanting something in a EX chassis.
