Homemade Seat riser for viper -- is it possible?

Anyone here ever attempt to make their own seat riser? i would like to get one for my viper, but I can't justify spending $250+ for a piece of plastic. It seems like it would be very easy to make, but I'm not sure what would be the best material to use. I hate the "on the ground" type feel of my viper.
 
wouldn't it have to fairly solid? If I could just come up with the right product... i really don't care what it looks like becuase I would just wrap it in black vinyl to match the seat.

Any idea the dimensions of the Excell riser?
 
Need to borrow someones Excell seat riser to get some dimesions. But to weld that thin of alum. your goin to need to TIG it and thats is a task unless you really have good welding skills and patience. I'd make it outta steel or stainless steel and powder coat the steel one or polish the stainless one. But still either one of those will still need to be TIG welded but is much eaiser than alum. I dont have patience for TIG welding thin alum, thicker isnt so bad. Try to MIG weld thin wall alum. more than likely gunna burn a whole right through it.. Thats my opinion. and experience with alum.
 
I'm thinking more of a building material... a lot of things will work, it's just keeping the weight down while maintaining the strength factor.
 
Well if I can get dimesions and angles. I'll prolly make a few outta steel and powder coated them and sell em. For alot cheaper than the $250 plastic one. Cause I want one to but sure anit gunna pay $250 bucks for it. Cause thats a rip.
 
make that two as long as it's not too heavy. Expert, if you happen to get dimensions, will you please let me know. Maybe SRX RIDER will chime in... I know he added on last season to his viper.

I know this might sound crazy, but what about using 1" insulation board layered and then shaved to match the excell riser(or to your liking). After shaping it,wrap it with a heavy duty black vinyl/waterproof material to keep it from being damaged. It would be dirt cheap and wouldn't be that difficult. Just look at is a contiuation of the seat. :lol:

A local guy here who does alot of seat work has made them by just adding foam to the stock cushion and recovering the bottom part. I believe he uses a little bit stiffer foam in the base, he said the feedback has been quite good on the improvement in comfort from sitting a few inches higher.
 
AJ that may work. Once and if I get dimesions it should only take a max. of 8 pieces of sheet metal to make it up. Cause the wedge part I can cut and bend into one piece and the rest would be all mounting brackets. I already know how I wanna make it and mount it. But it will take a few trys to make it right and I wont sell it to anyone till it is right. So help out finding dimesions the sooner I can start, but it be better if I could borrow it for a few days. Make sure the angles and lengths are right. I'd start from scratch but that will cost more money and steel isnt the cheapest right now.
 
Looks good, but I rather play with metal than foam. Like I this a simple thing to make out of sheet metal, shouldnt take more than a day or two to have a final product. Still havent decided on the thickness of sheet metal I'll use yet. But it'll be either 16 or 18 gauge steel, I really wanna use 18 but maybe to weak. Either way its only gunna add a few pounds. NEED ANGLES AND DIMESIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
ive seen a picture in years past that a guy took aluminum u chanel from a step later, it was like, 3-4in wide, on its edge, bent it in the shape of the seat bottom. mounted the seat on the gas tank and on the aluminum. this made the seat set ahead like 4-5 inches and up about 3-4.
 
Ok, who is going to try the foam idea on a viper? I looked it over and it looks great. Do you think it will take the shape of a Boss flat top?
 
Another reason I'm not tryin the seat foam idea, is cause I'm looking for the foward seat position like on Revs. You could use foam to get that forward seat position, but I think thats more of a task then cutting and tapping a few peices of metal. Compared to removing all the staples, forming the foam to your liking, re-wrapping, and re stapling. Make sure your look at your seat to see how much extra material you have to work with, cause I only have anywhere from a 1/2in-1 1/2in. of extra I mine. And if you wrap it to tight the material will just tear through the staples. But I went to school to for welding and fabing stuff up and I love working with metal, so thats another reason I'm goin my route. Let me know how they turn out though.
